Liposuction Continues To Be One Of America's Leading Surgical Cosmetic Procedures
According to the report from New York on the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery statistic report from the year 2008, liposuction fell from number one to number two for the top surgical cosmetic procedures of the year.
"For the first time in the twelve years these statistics have been collected liposuction is a runner up in popularity to breast augmentation. There is no doubt that this turnabout will generate discussions in the medical community and the public at large," said Alan Gold, MD, the president of the Aesthetic Society.
According to the Aesthetic Society, the number of various cosmetic procedures in 2008 has increased by 162 percent from when the society first started to gather statistics. For last year, the top surgical procedure was breast augmentation and the top nonsurgical procedure was Botox.
Liposuction still remains the top cosmetic procedure for men who made up over 8 percent of the cosmetic procedures for the year totally over 800,000 procedures. This, however, is roughly a 21 percent decrease in procedures from 2007, with a greater decrease in nonsurgical procedures than surgical procedures.
Women composed 92 percent of the cosmetic procedures from 2008 with over 9.3 million procedures, an 11 percent decrease from the previous year. Overall, breast augmentation was the number one procedure with liposuction number 2. There was less than a 50,000 difference between the number of breast augmentation procedures performed and the number of liposuction procedures while the difference between the number of liposuctions and the number of the third top procedure, eyelid surgery, was more than double that. However, when you consider the statistics for each age group, liposuction was the number one most common procedure for people in the 35-50 age group, which is the demographic it is generally most popular with. The 35-50 age group also had the largest number of procedures in 2008 with 45 percent and over 4.6 million procedures.
Racial and Ethnic minorities made up roughly 20 percent of the cosmetic procedures in 2008 with the largest group being Hispanics with about 8 percent of the year's total procedures.
In 2008, Americans spent nearly 12 billion dollars on cosmetic procedures. 7.2 billion dollars were spent on surgical procedures and the remaining 4.6 billion dollars were spent on nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. The standard error for the 2008 survey conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is +/- 3.21 % with a 95% confidence level.
