Liposuction - Different Types Available
We've all seen the reality shows that film inside a plastic surgeon's operating room
and remember the details of exactly how they perform the different procedures. Liposuction, no doubt, is one that stands out as looking possibly the most painful and definitely the goriest. The rough manner in which the cannula is shoved in and out of the thighs of patients would turn most people off from the procedure. But take heart; there are new methods in the world of body sculpting that may just entice you to take a second look.
Improvements on the Traditional Methods
Traditional liposuction is what you have probably watched take place on TV shows. But improvements in that method encourage more ease in the procedure, resulting in less jerky and more restrained extracting movements.
The dry technique was the original form of this procedure. It required general anesthesia and resulted in significant post-operative pain and some complications. Wet methods were then introduced which consisted of injecting saline solutions to assist in dislodging the fat to be removed.
Tumescent Methods
This method uses only local anesthesia, eliminating an array of possible complications. A solution is injected into the area that not only aids in the release of the targeted fat, but also numbs the area and works against excessive bleeding and consequently, bruising.
Ultrasound Assisted Method
This type of liposuction utilizes the ultrasound technology not as we may be familiar with it, but instead to target sound waves to the area. This process breaks down the fat cells and allows for greater ease of removal. While this technique may require a bit more time, it is highly effective and results in far less pain and discomfort.
The Laser Method
This form of the procedure requires smaller incisions and works to actually melt the fat, which is then suctioned out with a much smaller cannula. In this method, the cannula is equipped with the laser, requiring fewer incisions and more accuracy. A second benefit to this method is that the heat generated by the laser doubles to naturally contract the surrounding skin, tightening the area as well.
Liposuction, in fact, has come so far that some surgeons refer to it as 'liposculpture.' This is due in part to the significantly smaller cannulas of today that allow for more precise and targeted fat removal, resembling the art of sculpting.
