Liposuction Vacations Are Cheap, But Risky
Cosmetic surgery costs are high n the United States because there are relatively few practitioners
, meaning little competition and incentive to lower prices. Insurance also does not cover cosmetic surgery since it is not necessary and does not have health benefits, so those considering liposuction are looking at huge bills. However, in recent years a cheaper option has appeared- cosmetic surgery vacations. These so-called vacations combine cosmetic procedures such as liposuction with a vacation in an exotic place, because in other countries surgery is less expensive. Yet however appealing this sounds, there are many risks that may outweigh the benefits of low prices.
First of all, there are various safety risks. Although there are many superb surgeons around the world, there is no international system for regulating medical standards. A foreign facility may not offer the same quality of work or same degree in safety. It may have looser rules about cleanliness, personnel qualification, and equipment quality. The doctors may not be fully board certified, or as well certified to American standards.
Liposuction vacation packages also provide little to no post-operative care once the patient goes home. If patients have complications after surgery, they may not be able to receive the best help and care because an American doctor may not know what surgical technique was used by the foreign doctor. This is also a problem if revisions need to be made, and often liposuction performed by a foreign doctor may be completely altered and thus worthless if an American doctor has to go in and do corrections his own way.
All of this can be costly both financially and health-wise. Patients should also realize that if there are any complications during or after liposuction that require hospitalization, their insurance may not be able to cover it if done in a foreign facility. Travelers medical insurance is a great idea for people considering a liposuction vacation, but that too will cost money.
Even if the surgeon and facility are completely safe and skilled, the vacation part of the experience may not be what the patient was hoping for. In fact, many vacation packages offer post-operative activities that are completely incompatible with recovery from surgery.
Liposuction requires a few days of rest before returning to normal activities, and such pastimes as water skiing, deep sea diving, and parasailing are not normal activities. Some procedures discourage patients from strenuous exercise for as much as two weeks. Playing outdoors increases risk for infection. The climate may not be conducive to recovery either. Sunlight can cause bad reactions with certain antibiotics, and heat can make healing stitches uncomfortable.
Although it sounds like a great idea, liposuction vacations are really only good for cheap surgery. But after that the costs are unpredictable, as complications easily treated and covered by insurance in the U.S. are not so internationally, and the fun vacation will probably be an uncomfortable disappointment. People looking at liposuction are probably better off paying the domestic price of liposuction and enjoying their new appearance and a vacation later on.
