Liposuction - What To Do And What Not To
Many men and women around the world are choosing liposuction surgery for a variety of reasons
. Whether you would like to remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles after massive weight loss or just have a few nagging pounds that you can't seem to get rid of, there are a few Do's and Don'ts to keep in mind when considering this type of elective cosmetic procedure.
Do: Find a surgeon you can trust. Selecting a plastic surgeon for your liposuction surgery should be a thoughtful process. Be sure you find someone you can easily talk to and feel comfortable airing your questions and concerns with. He or she should be able to address your questions and help guide your expectations to be realistic.
Don't: Make the decision to have the operation to please someone else. All enhancements through cosmetic surgery should be done by individuals with otherwise healthy self-esteem. Choosing to undergo an invasive surgical procedure to please someone else may cause resentment in the end and may actually harm the relationship.
Do: Quit smoking. Everyone knows that cigarettes are bad for your lungs. But did you know they are in many other ways too? Consider quitting completely, but even if you can't, you should at least drop the habit for two weeks before and after surgery. Cigarette smoking constricts blood flow and significantly hinders the delivery of oxygen and other healing materials from reaching the liposuction incision sites.
Don't: Ignore early signs of infection. Your physician will want to start you on a course of antibiotics if one or more of your incision sites get infected. Be sure to promptly report any increase in redness, inflammation or pain.
Do: Follow other pre- and post-operative instructions closely. You are spending a lot of time and money on this liposuction surgery. Be sure to get your money's worth! Your surgeon and his friendly team of assistants will provide you with a list of instructions before you enter the operating theater. Before you go home, be sure you understand all of the care instructions during the recovery period. This will help minimize the recovery period and should make the incision sites heal cleanly with minimal scarring.
Don't: Engage in vigorous exercise or sexual activity for at least 6 weeks. Liposuction is major surgery! Take care of your body and plan to have help around the house if you need it. Bribe a friend or family member to stay with you during the post-operative period and let them do any heavy lifting you may require. Plan the surgery during a time in your personal and professional life that you can take a little downtime. You've earned it!
Do: Enjoy your new figure! Liposuction patients are often told to wear compression garments and bandages during the post-operative period. Once your doctor tells you it's okay to remove the garments, go shopping for new clothes and enjoy your new shape!
