In recent years, it was wildly effective. As of late, it's effectiveness has decreased substantially. The cause of this is unclear, yet many believe it's because of the enormous influx of new marketers who choose this as their method of choice to promote their products.
Don't despair! There is a much more effective way to make money as an affiliate marketer. It's called email marketing, or list building. Email marketing is simply the process of capturing leads, in this case email addresses, and marketing to them on a consistent basis through ezines. Ezines are newsletters that are delivered by email.
There are several ways to go about building a large email list. I've taken the liberty of listing four very powerful methods below.
1. Ad Swaps
Ad swaps are generally done once you already have at least 200-300 subscribers, but they can be done before if you have a suitable means of advertising. In order to do an effective ad swap, you have to contact other affiliate marketers in your niche and ask if they will advertise your squeeze page link in their next email broadcast.
Obviously, they'll want you to put their ad in your next email as well. If you don't have a large list, you can offer to advertise for them in another way. Maybe you have a premium account at a classified ad site that they don't? Posting a classified ad promoting their link is something you can offer them in return.
2. Article Marketing
Yes, I know what you are thinking. This is nothing new. You're right. There is a way to put a new spin on an old method, however. In addition to submitting your article to article directories, there are other ways you can benefit from it.
For instance, you can turn your article into a PDF report and submit it to file sharing sites that allow users to download their files. Another effective method is to turn your article into a slide show and submit it to slide sharing sites.
An equally lucrative method is to turn your article into video and submit it to video directories. In addition, you can rewrite your article and submit it to Web 2.0 sites like HubPages and Squidoo.
3. Signature Video Advertising
Video marketing is rapidly becoming very popular, and for good reason. There is a lot of traffic that can be generated this way. If you want to capitalize on videos to build your list, set up a simple web page with a short tutorial video about your niche.
Underneath the video, add a link to your squeeze page or blog. At the end of the video, explain to the viewer that they can get more free information by clicking the link and filling out the opt-in form.
Many people won't give out their email address anymore without knowing what they will be getting. That's why this method works so well. You are giving them some information for free right away, and letting them know what they can expect if they decide to sign up to your list.
In order to get traffic to your initial video, sign up to forums related to your niche and put the link in your forum signature.
4. Amazon Video Reviews
This is a little-known technique that can produce some very powerful results. Did you know that Amazon allows users to post video reviews of their products?
Find a book in your niche and purchase it. Create a short video where you discuss the good and bad qualities of the book and post it to Amazon as a video review.
Make sure to watermark your video with your squeeze page link and tell viewers that they can find more information about their niche there. You'll be very surprised how many subscribers you'll get from this.
There are many more ways to build your list, but you have to be creative. As your list grows, you'll see that more and more opportunities become available to you. Your initial goal should be to get 100 subscribers. Once you achieve this, it's going to get easier from there.
