Whether you like it or not, whether you know it or not, you are the sun about which your toddler orbits. It's a very privileged position which is laden with responsibility. Some mothers relish by the challenge, some are terrified by it, some lay awake during the nighttime wondering whether the IKEA baby seat had been a good saving over and above the security and huge price tag of a MaxiCosi. Which ever type you're, being a mother as well as the choices you make ensures that you are the 'Ultimate Guru' to your youngster.

Amongst other jobs a Mum can be described as child's life coach. You help your children learn how to settle conflict, share toys, laugh when they're happy, convey love to those they care about, avoid being bullied, avoid becoming the bully, understand table etiquette, realise that everybody does not need to visit their poo and the vast list continues... It's you they look to searchingly while they are doing something they know is full of mischievous intent and it's also also you they look to when they've created their latest work of art. You're both the scorner and the praiser in fact it is your opinion that matters most.

We're becoming more and more, a culture of parents which has an Americanised attitude to the understanding of parenting. We take charge of our child's reputation. We ensure our children wear the latest trends, allow them to dye their hair and in some extreme cases, choose to take that leap in to madness and start to permit children to have silicone implants. We create ostentatious birthday parties by way of ensuring popularity, take them to ballerina clubs, football clubs, swimming clubs just so our kids are in with the in crowd. While they're still young we guide each and every part of their life, and protect it as if it's our own.

Unfortunately, with this beautiful responsibility comes great pain and stress, and as a mother you really do come to have an understanding of the saying, 'you need to take the rough with the smooth'. When your child is ill it's you the cry for, it is only you they trust with their lives. When they bump their arm, it's 'Mummy!' they cry, sometimes 'Daddy' but rarely Joe Bloggs. You're their number one because you're their number one fan, and so, in short, that's why 'Mum's The Word'.
