Listing The Symptoms of ADHD Children

Whether you are a parent, teacher, or concerned friend knowing the

symptoms of ADHD can be an invaluable tool in both recognizing the condition

and dealing with these special children. It may also help parents of ADHD

children recognize that may have the condition (50% do) and encourage family therapy or self-help methods to better cope.

As you may already known the symptoms of ADHD children are classified in

three different categories; inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. The

primary category is inattention and encompasses such things as lack of

sustained attention, problems with concentration, and the inability to finish

tasks. The child may also be overactive and impulsive. Many children under the

age of 6 are quite nervous, and may have problems communicating and interacting

which in turn may lead to less than stellar behavior. They may also be

impatient and be observed fidgeting and squirming.

Next, if you have a few more minutes to spare why don't we break down

the symptoms of ADHD children (inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity) into

separate categories focusing on recognizable behaviors.

Inattention or Distractibility

They are: not being able to concentrate, spacing out, poor time

management skills, starting but not finishing projects, forgetfulness, becoming

distracted even when outside factors aren't the cause, unusually sensitive to

outside distractions, being able to focus sometimes but not other times, being

able to focus well on some things but not on others, making careless mistakes,

poor handwriting skills, trouble with detail, focusing on the big picture

instead of specific details, procrastination, shying away from tasks which

require sustained mental effort, and constantly losing things.

Impulsivity

They are: impatience, insisting on immediate gratification, inexplicably

blurting out answers before a question is finished, acting without any

consideration of the consequences, failure to respect others personal space,

butting into conversations, saying unsuitable things, saying the first thing

that comes to mind, and difficulty finding the patience to wait in line or wait

his/her turn.

Hyperactivity

They are: talking non-stop

(mainly seen in ADHD girls), very high energy levels making them appear as if

they are always on the go, inability to sit still, constant fidgeting, restlessness

to point where failure to do so leads to lack of concentration and focus,

difficulty playing or engaging in quite time activities, excessive climbing or

running, and trouble staying seated in a classroom environment.

What next? Once the symptoms

of ADHD children have been recognized the obvious next question is what to do

next? For parents of children struggling with ADHD the answer likely is finding

an effective treatment option. The most common forms of treatment are

prescription stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and non-stimulant medications

such as Intuniv or Strattera. While effective, all ADHD prescription

medications come with a number of serious label warnings.

The risk of side effects, or perhaps lack of success (30% of the time),

has prompted many parents to favor non-prescription options. A couple examples of

these are behavior modification therapy and/or natural remedies. Natural

remedies for ADHD are a side effect free way to address such problematic

symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, erratic behavior and

hyperactivity and can be used both as a standalone treatment or as a compliment

to other non-prescription alternatives. They also have been shown to produce

long-term lasting benefits about half of the time.
