Little Known Tests For Apartment Rentals
Everyone loves to walk into a great big apartment with the sun streaming in
. Landlords love this too! When you walk into a sundrenched potential apartment for rent you immediately turn to your partner, roommate, puppy, friend, and say "I'll take it!" Well, before you sit down and sign the lease, there are some other things you should check for first.
Something I always do when I'm looking at new apartments is check the water pressure. One of the first places I head to once I've decided that I like the layout and size of the apartment is to the bathroom to check the water pressure. Don't you just hate when you don't have enough pressure behind the showerhead to rinse off properly? I'm not saying this is a make or break part of the rental agreement, but it's better to find out before you sign the lease than after.
Another thing you need to take a look at is the kitchen. Can you open the oven door the whole way? Some apartments for rent do not have large kitchens and it is impossible to open the oven the whole way because something is impeding it.
Ask the landlord about trash pickup. You don't want to be stuck above the garbage room when the garbage is only picked up or taken out once a week. On a similar note, you should ask how often an exterminator or pest control professional is brought in by the building. Don't be alarmed if the answer is high. This is actually a good thing. It shows that the building is taking an active role against pests. It doesn't mean that there is a constant infestation!
Last but not least, you should talk to the people in the building. This will tell you a lot about day to day living in the building. Are there really loud neighbors upstairs? Your next door neighbors will know. Is the street safe to walk at night? Your building neighbors will be able to tell you. How are the apartments in the winter, summer, rain, snow? You can glean important information about your apartment for rent from the people who live there!
If it's possible, you should try to talk to the people who are living there at the moment. They can give you some insight into the small quirks of the apartment. It may be a luxury apartment but they can tell you that you need to jiggle the handle to make the toilet stop running or that one of the windows in the living room only opens a few inches.
Again, these are not little nuances that on their own should dissuade you from renting an apartment but are definitely worth knowing before you move in. They can also be helpful in comparing two rental apartments if you can't decide between them.
