This is an important election not only because of how many different seats are up for grabs, but because the political path is going to change big time with Republicans expected to win a huge victory.
This is a live blogging event. I dont have it set up to auto-refresh, so please refresh from time to time. Well include whats going on, who is winning in the important races and provide some insight into what that means. However, expect, at the end of the week, a more in depth analysis of tonights victories/losses.
1:07 AM WeThePeoplePolitics.com is Signing Off
Even though there are a few more elections to be counted, for the most part, the political landscape for the next two years is determined. Republicans have gained control of the House and the Democrats, under the leadership of Harry Reid, have kept the Senate. Good night all!
1:01 AM President Obamas Senate Seat Won by Mark Steven Kirk, Republican
The seat that was held by President Obama before he won his election for Presidency has traded sides to the Republicans with Mark Steven Kirk beating Alexi Giannoulias, a Democrat. Mr. Giannoulias was believed to have had the race in the beginning, but as more districts starting reporting, it quickly changed to Mr. Kirk.
12:52 AM California's Proposition 19 to Legalize Marijuana Fails
California had a special ballot called Proposition 19 that people could vote on today. It would have legalized marijuana in the state; however, it failed to pass.
12:42 AM AP Projects Harry Reid, Democrat, will Beat Sharron Angle in Nevada
The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, is expected to win his election in Nevada according to the AP. However, he better get used to working with John Boehner because Nancy Pelosi is out of her job as Speaker of the House. I didnt like her.
12:30 AM Joe Sestak, Democrat, Concedes Victory to Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania Senate
While he started off with a decent lead, he didnt do too well in one of Philadelphias suburbs which hurt his chances. Sestak has announced he is conceding victory to Pat Toomey. While the victory here would have cemented the Democrats control over the Senate, they still have a sizable chance, especially with results showing Harry Reid leading.
12:20 AM Nan Hayworth, Republican, Replaces John Hall in NY 19
This is the district where I was raised, so its obviously one of importance to me. She seems like a very solid individual who will hopefully help the 19th district out. However, right across the river, in the 22nd district, it seems that Maurice Hinchey, Democrat, is going to hold out against George Phillips.
11:30 PM If Reid Loses, Who Replaces Him?
If Democrats win the Senate??"which they are expected to do??"but Harry Reid loses in Nevada, who will replace him? Could Chuck Schumer step up and become the next Senate leader? When having a conversation with a colleague of mine, Steve said, Hed be more aggressive than Reid, coming from a safe state.I have to agree with him.
11:25 PM Republicans Take the House
With poll after poll finalizing its counting, its become obvious that the Republicans are taking the House of Representatives. In some states and districts, such as NY 19th District, Democrat John Hall is currently losing to Nan Hayworth. Democrats have, for the most part, been unable to really bring people out to vote for them.
9:40 PM Joe Sestak, Democrat, Could Win Pennsylvania Senate
In another election that was a toss up, Joe Sestak, Democrat, has a serious chance of winning this election. With 43% reporting, he has 54.9% of the vote going for him. While there are still a lot of votes to count, some news media argue that he has a great chance of winning.
9:27 PM Republicans Poised to Gain House
With the way the elections are going, Republicans are poised to gain control of the House of Representatives. However, they will probably only gain around 50+ votes rather than the 75 votes that some believed would happen. Since they arent doing as well in some elections, that massive blow out is impossible.
9:06 PM Andrew Cuomo, Democrat, Wins New York Governor
Despite the fact polls have just closed in New York (this is my state), Andrew Cuomo has been called the winner of this election. While Paladino fought a hard fight, many believe because of how angry he came off, he was considered too crazy for New York.
8:54 PM Todd Young, Republican, Wins Indianas 9th District
While it was projected that Todd Young would win this district, it does present some alarming information for Democrats. He has won with an almost 14% lead which suggests that people are really frustrated with Democrats. With this in mind, it might suggest what is going to happen across the country in other key elections.
8:45 PM CNN and NBC Call West Virginia for Democrats in Senate
Joe Manchin III is poised to win in West Virginia for the Senate race. This race nearly cements the Democrats ability to keep a majority in the Senate. This was a highly contested race and the fact that the Democrats have kept it will help them.
8:41 PM Polls to Stay Open in Bridgeport, CT
Because of a shortage of ballots in the area, the polls are going to stay open until 10:00 PM. However, despite the extra time, it is anticipated that Blumenthal, Democrat, will still beat McMahon, Republican.
8:36 PM Did an unfavorable opinion of Sarah Palin Help Coons?
According to exit polls, ODonnell got 9/10 votes from people who supported the Tea Party. However, what the polls show is that nearly two thirds of people who voted said that they really didnt like Sarah Palin. Considering both candidates split the Independent vote 49% to 49%, it could be argued that this played a role in ODonnell not winning the Senate race tonight. Or, Delaware is just a Blue state through and through.
8:10 PM Republican Marco Rubio Wins Florida Senate
In what is an upset for moderates, Marco Rubio, Republican from Florida, has been dubbed the winner. With 20% polling, he has 50% of the vote against Charlie Crist who only has about 29%. Some believed Crist might have had it in him to take the vote, but with Democrats voting for him and Kendrick Meek, his ability to win this election was very tight.
8:06 PM Democrat Christopher Coons Poised to Win Delaware Senate
Christine ODonnell was never expected to win and yet she still tried. With the Tea Party getting a victory in Kentucky, some, Im sure, thought that they would be able to win in other states. However, Delaware is going to be going blue.
8:00 PM Democrat John Yarmuth Called Winner for Kentuckys 3rd District
Democrats were expected to be rolled over; however, the solid victory that this candidate gained over his Republican opponent suggests that there might not be as much of a loss for Democrats as they otherwise expected. However, he was projected to win this election despite how flaky the polls have been thus far, so well have to wait until later to determine just how apocalyptic this election will be.
7:43 PM Republican Bob Portman to Win Ohio Senate
According to the AP and MSNBC, Republican Bob Portman is poised to win Ohio. While the polls just closed fifteen minutes ago, his fund raising ability has many believing that he is the one that will win this election.
7:39 PM Rand Paul Winner of Kentucky Senate
An early evening victory for the Tea Party with Rand Paul taking the victory. The AP reported that Rand Paul was the victor of this election. Despite the fact all of the results are not in, for the most part, its believed he is going to win based on the number of votes that have come in so far and the way those votes are looking. He is the first victory for the Tea Party and therefore, the first victory for Republicans.
