Function
The function of a conventional room thermostat is to monitor the room temperature and switch off the heating when it does not need to be on, either during pre-selected off periods or whenever the set room temperature has been reached. It controls automatically at one set temperature. A programmable room thermostat (combined programmer and room thermostat) enables users to match their home's temperature to their requirements automatically throughout the day by using a number of pre-selected time/temperature periods.
For instance, a family might wish to get up for breakfast to a warm house at 20OC. This temperature could then be reduced to, say, 16OC for the morning housework and, after this, stepped up again for extra lunchtime comfort.
A frost protection setting might then be appropriate during regular afternoon outing such as dog-walking or shopping. Increased warmth would be needed for the evening meal and perhaps 21OC for the evening's TV viewing.
Overnight the setting could be reduced to just frost protection level which means the heat rarely comes on at all.
A programmable room thermostat enables these temperature changes to be programmed very simply. Desired temperature levels and change-over times can be freely selected by the user to suit household routines and to achieve desired comfort levels with minimal energy consumption.
What is more, overall home comfort is improved because stuffiness due to overheating is pretty much eliminated, especially if TRVs are used to control individual room temperatures.
Installation
Installing programmable room thermostats is just as easy as fitting conventional programmers. Clear instructions are provided. Operation
Most domestic room thermostats are on/off controls they monitor room temperature and switch the heating on or off accordingly to maintain the desired comfort level. When the room temperature reaches the set point, the switch breaks, removing power from pump and boiler. When the temperature falls too low, the switch closes again to reconnect the supply.
Programmable room thermostats are also on/off controls. The simple difference is that they allow a number of daily temperature settings that change automatically at pre-selected times. With this in mind, it is easier to think about them operating in relatively short blocks of heating time at different room temperatures.
It is not a question of completely switching off the heating, but of changing the set temperature and for how long.
The benefit of this extra flexibility, of course, is that the heating supply can be much more closely tailored to household needs, using energy only when and to the level needed and eliminating the periods of overheating sometimes experienced with conventional thermostats.
Far From Complicated
Heating installers today have little trouble installing conventional electro-mechanical or electronic programmers. Programmable room thermostats are just as easy to install and far from complicated to use. By fitting them instead of traditional programmer and thermostat set-ups, they can help their customer save money and enjoy improved comfort.
