The capital of Scotland is rich in historical architecture and one of its many historic streets is The Cowgate

. The name was given to this street because in previous centuries, it was used to herd cows to the market place. The street was also known by the name of Little Ireland during late 19th century,for a majority of the city's Irish immigrant community lived in its building.The Cowgate is located near the magnificentEdinburgh Castle, and is a part ofcity area listed under World Heritage Sites. Magdalen Chapel (dedicated to Mary Magdalen) is the oldest building of the streetwhich draws over 6000 visitors annually. The chapel,built in 1544,was initiallyused as a hospital for some time looking after the poor and sick. It is also prominent for beingthe first meeting place of the Methodist, Baptist, and other Christian assemblies of Scotland.Magdalen Chapel went through a major restoration activity in 1992-93 costing 305,000 and is now the headquarters of the Scottish Reformation Society.

St Cecilia's Hall Museum of Instrumentswas built for musical society of Edinburgh in 1761 for concerts and is the oldest concert hall of Scotland. The hall has a collection ofold musical instruments constructed back in 1840s and interestingly most of these instruments are still in playing order. There are more than 50 instruments on display including keyboards, organs, fortepianos and guitars.

St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church of Edinburgh was built in 1772 and has been a heart of devotion and worship ever since. After going through a major reconstruction in 1929,it is a regular worship place for residents and visitors. The church also has a shop where visitors can buy books, holy water stoops, crucifixes, statues and other gifts.
