Living out loud--March 2011
This is a blog about a life (mine) that is really largely uneventful but for me quite satisfying, or as Shakespeare once so aptly wrote, "a poor thing but mine own". I plan to give the bare bones outline of the days, the weeks etc. of my daily experiences with pertinent ( I hope) comments. Why would I want to do this? I suppose, because I can!

Where there is intolerance in a community, people have a greater chance of becoming violent. We saw this recently in Arizona where a much admired, newly re-elected congresswoman Garbielle Gifford and her staff were gunned down at a community meeting. 13 people were wounded and 6 people were killed including a 9 year old girl.
Arizona has shown a high level of intolerance against it's minorities and also against people with differences of opinions, Even an Arizona sheriff has called Arizona the "mecca for prejudice and bigotry", and since they also have easy access to guns, this becomes an almost certain recipe for disaster.
I hope that this senseless violence will help us to realize that part of being an American is allowing freedom of thought and speech for everyone and as Voltaire wrote in the 1700s," I do not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Our thoughts and good wishes go out to Congresswoman Gifford and all those who were wounded, and our condolences go out to the families of those who died. Let their sacrifice be the impetus that leads to change not only in Arizona but in all of our states.

I recently heard about something that I had not known about before. In South Africa there is something called corrective rape which is done to lesbians. 150 woman a day are being raped . Very few of these rapist are ever convicted of this crime which leads me to believe that the authorities have up until now simply ignored it, but now a small group of women in South Africa have banded together and provided a safe- house and are taking political action to prevent this crime and are also providing information of this violent crime to the world. I heard about this criminal act from a free web-site called http://change.org

Of course the ongoing major story on all the news channels is what has been happening in the middle east. At this writing, Tunisia and Egypt have been peacefully able to change their longtime dictatorship and there is now continuing turmoil in Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and other middle east countries. What will happen in all of these countries no one can predict, but the real story is that large numbers of people have suddenly realized that if they band together non-violently they can exert an enormous amount of pressure on their existing, corrupt governments. What all of these citizens will ultimately do with this power remains to be seen, but what we do know is that after what has happened in Tunisia and Egypt, the middle east will never again be the same.
