Locksmithing as a profession has been around for many centuries. The first lock was actually invented somewhere around 445 B.C., and was composed of a wooden casing and tumblers. Additionally, a wooden pin was used to open this device. It served the same purpose as today for security measures, and was used on both doors and city gates.

It wasn't until the times of the Romans that metal was used in the fabrication of locks. They fashioned special keys on many of these units, designed to work only if the exact one was used. This added an extra layer of security to the system, and helped to reduce break-ins caused by lock pickers.

The profession didn't really gain a foothold until the 14th century when it came under the umbrella of the guild system. Craftsmen had to build and submit a working model before they were given the title of "Master Locksmith." Unfortunately, these total controls lead to a deeply corrupted community, where prices were fixed and many designs were never released to the public.

It was during the onset of World War 2 that this profession became more noted for its importance for design, installation and also security. Many professionals were drafted specifically for their expertise in this type of work. They continued to perform civilian type duties while in the employ of the allies mainly installing and servicing the different products available. Of course, the design aspect of Locksmithing was neglected due to the shortage of skilled tradesman available at home.

Today, the functions are for the most part the same as they have been for the last century. Installation, design and management are still at the forefront of this jobs checklist. However, with the growing presence of technology, many locksmiths are now dealing with electronic devices used to discourage break-ins at corporate sites. Protection has become more vital than ever before, since information is the most valuable commodity any company can have. This of course requires a more sophisticated security system, including a double authentication key in many cases.

The role of the locksmith has remained the same at its basic core since the invention of the first lock back in 445 B.C. However, as advances and innovations have been made, the devices have become more complicated, almost eliminating the standard pin tumbler model. It is a long and storied profession, destined to live on for generations.
