The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index improved in August to 53.5 from 50.4 in July. The data reflects Americans having a more positive outlook on the economy.
The Institute for Supply Management report last Wednesday that economic activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in August for the 13th consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 16th consecutive month. ISM'S Purchasing Managers Index registered 56.3 percent, following July's reading of 55.5 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding.

Last week we received a slew of data which really set a more encouraging outlook for the economy. This was a huge relief after experiencing an August of back to back negativity in the news, and widespread talk of a double dip recession. While a double dip in the economy is beginning to seem less and less likely, any growth is still likely to be quite modest. Retail sales numbers for August are looking encouraging yet economists were mixed on how much back-to-school demand there would be to drive sales. We are in anticipation of the US Census Bereau's report on August retail sales scheduled to be released September 14th. Stronger sales in August could suggest a stronger peak season can expected in the rest of the year.
