Even though creating a logo design should be left to people who are trained to do it, there could be a slim chance that a common Joe could be able to design a professional looking logo, with a lot of luck.

I have to admit that I designed the logo for the first online store I setup. Not surprisingly, the logo design was the first thing the person I sold the store to changed. It was a good decision on his part, although I was a bit hurt.

There are few things you need to consider if would like to go about designing your very own logo. But before you begin, keep these few points at the back of your mind: a logo design should be memorable, describable, look good in just plain black and scalable.

3 Logo Types

There are basically 3 logo styles you can consider - text based, iconic and a combination of the two. For new companies, a combination mark would be a good choice. A combination mark associates a name with an image in one go.

Another thing to remember is that your logo design need not represent the industry your company is in. You can use an abstract mark to draw attention to your company's attributes such as networking or teamwork. This works well for organizations who offer services which are hard to describe.

Keep It Simple

Complicated designs should be avoided at all cost. Complicated logos can be very hard to describe and therefore hard to recall. Certain logos with complicated designs do not look good when reproduced on particular mediums such embroidery on fabric. In such cases, having an alternative logotype or text-based design would come in handy.

Observe The Golden Ratio

To me, just about the best aspect ratio is a square. You might have noticed that some logos look just fine on office stationery but the moment it hits larger format prints, it starts to look awkward. The aspect logo of a square solves the problem of logo looking too long or too tall.

The next best ratio is called the golden mean or golden ratio. There is actually a formula to it but an easier way would be to look at the ratio of the everyday name card as a guide. Before you settle on a design make sure you have viewed it in a few sizes first.

Color

Although selecting an appropriate color for your logo design is important, always begin in black. If it looks good in black, then chances of it looking good in other colors is pretty high. When adding color, do not go overboard. Again, simplicity is the key. Keeping it simple yet effective is actually a real challenge. Which is why, companies pay professional to design their logos.
