London 2012 Olympic Torch Receives Design Of The Year Award

The London 2012 Olympic Torch has received the Design of the Year Award at an awards ceremony that was hosted by the Design Museum.

The Olympic Torch which was created by BarberOsgerby, a British design studio, was put together through the use of a highly innovative precision laser cutting technique.

The torch put together with aluminium will be carried more than 8,000 miles during the Torch Relay a 70-day event covering the whole UK.

The Torch beat 88 other entries to claim the award.

It is pierced with 8,000 circular holes which will represent the mileage and the 8,000 torchbearers. The holes are not solely for decorative purposes, they also help to make the torch lighter and to stop heat conduction.

London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe declared: "The Torch is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Olympic Games and we are thrilled that our design has won this prestigious title.

"I am delighted we have such a brilliantly designed, engineered and crafted Torch that will help to celebrate the amazing personal achievements of each of our 8,000 Torchbearers and give them their moment to shine."

The Torch weighs about one kilogram and stands at 800 millimetres tall and consists of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin. The laser cutting technique was implemented to help form the four pieces that constitute the main body of the Torch.

Furthermore, a pressing tool specialist was employed to help form the triangular shape and the material was then put together to create the whole form of the Torch.

Seb Coe further added: "The very best of contemporary British design, engineering and manufacturing techniques are encapsulated in the London 2012 Olympic Torch."

Deyan Sudjic, director at the Design Museum, stated that a special combination of skill and engineering had been put into creating the Olympic Torch.

"Nothing is harder to get right than designing for the Olympics. The lightness and simplicity of Barber Osgerbys London 2012 Olympic Torch does just that," he further stated.

"The Torch not only captures the spirit of London as Olympic Host City but also demonstrates how design can celebrate traditional ideas in a modern way."
