London Van Scrappage Scheme

London Van Scrappage Scheme

London Van Scrappage Scheme

We have been writing numerous articles recently covering the UKs push to make driving much more eco-friendly. We reported a few weeks ago that the London area had installed the first free electrical fuelling station for commercial vehicles. Well we are pleased to report that they are going one step further. The Drive There is an alternative motive behind this incentive. It has been announced by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson that there will be a low emission zone (LEZ) set out covering London. This LEZ effectively is a zone in which all vehicles must hit the agreed emission levels. If the vehicles do not meet the required standard then they will have to pay a fine. This fine is quite steep at 100 a day, so for business owners who have older fleets this could be a huge problem. The Incentive The great news is that Ford has jumped on board with the proposals for London and decided to offer a very tempting scrappage scheme. Essentially this is an extension to the scheme that was offered across the country around 12 months ago. There has been incentive criteria set to tempt fleet owners into trading in their old vehicles. Compare Van Insurance from a UK based website. So how does the scheme work (here's the criteria)-

Commercial vehicles must be older than 10 years.

Scheme covers Ford Fiesta, Ford Transit Connect and Ford Transit

The incentive is up to 3,000 off a new vehicle in the above range. Specifically 1,000 off Fiesta, 1,500 off Transit connect, 2,000 off Transit (front wheel drive) and 3,000 off Transit V348.

Boris Johnson was extremely pleased with the inclusion of Ford in the scheme. He is happy that Londoners can trade up their vehicles to more efficient models. He is also happy with the fact that many of the models have been produced by the skilled UK workforce. The LEZ is part of the larger plan to make the capital city much more environmentally friendly. As the traffic and population in the capital city is so large a major cut would be excellent for the UK. The Mayor seems to have the emissions of the commercial vehicles in the capital well within his sights. This however is not a problem if they can offer the users of the offending vehicles an affordable alternative. What would be excellent would be to see other commercial vehicle providers follow Ford into offering a similar incentive. This would create more competition in the supply of these vehicles and could tempt more and more drivers to make the change. If this achieves the reduction in emissions everyone wins.
