Loneliness In Men- It Does Happen!
It may come as a surprise to some but men and loneliness aren't exactly strangers to each other
. Society imposes numerous standards of behavior for both men and women, and there is a tremendous pressure to conform to these standards. Certain standards dictate-although largely in unspoken terms-that men keep their emotions in check at all times.
In many societies around the world, males are brought up to believe that showing emotion is weak and unmanly, and this helps reinforce the erroneous notion that "normal" men don't feel loneliness. Men do feel lonely as a matter of fact, and the degree by which the condition affects them can be remarkably similar to the degree of loneliness that can be felt by women.
It may even be said that almost all men suffer from loneliness in a way that differs from how most women experience the emotional state. Loneliness in men can be the result of a constant internal struggle between societal or familial expectations and personal desires. In a highly patriarchal society where men are expected to conform to rigid genre definitions, men may suffer from loneliness even though the factors commonly associated with the emotional condition aren't present.
Some of the most common factors that can contribute to a sense of loneliness in men are isolation from a peer group or family, separation from a loved one, involuntary lifestyle factors, and undesirable circumstances. Leaving to work or go to school in an unfamiliar city, the death of a loved one, a prison sentence or being drafted into the military are all possible reasons for men to experience loneliness.
Men may also experience loneliness even in situations when they seemingly have everything they could need to be happy and fulfilled. Everyone suffers from the condition at some point or another, and there is no telling why different men in a similar situation could be happy while others sink deeper and deeper into the depths of loneliness. Men who are surrounded with friends and family aren't necessarily immune to the condition either, and there are many who feel as if being in the company of loved ones isn't enough to dispel the overbearing pain of loneliness.
For a lot of men, loneliness can be solved easily enough by short-term contact with other people. This could include hanging out with a close friend for a few hours or engaging in activities that could be considered potentially destructive. While it is not our place to prescribe which course of action is the best solution to loneliness, men who deal with the condition by engaging in unsafe sexual contact, drug abuse or gambling risk making their condition even worse than it already is.
Perhaps a more feasible solution to dealing with loneliness in men is to open up avenues of contact with friends and family and to get out once in a while. Although seemingly trivial, the simple act of chatting with an old friend or a parent may help dispel any loneliness that you might be feeling.
