Long Distance Driving Tips

With the holiday season upon us many people are taking long road trips, visiting family and friends or even for weekend getaway. The goal of any long distance driving trip is to get to your destination safely. It is important not to worry about how fast you arrive at your destination and instead focus on safe driving. When your main concern is trying to get there in as little time as possible that is usually when mistakes and errors occur. There are some tips you can follow to keep you and your passengers safe.

Preparing the car for a road trip is very important. Make sure all the routine car maintenance is done, such as an oil change, check the brakes and make sure all vehicle fluids are at proper levels. Make sure the wipers work properly for maximum visibility in bad conditions. The tires should be inflated to the proper levels, not only for safer driving but also for maximum fuel efficiency. It is always good to have a spare tire with you just in case. Other important items are a plus such as a gps, cell phone, water, some snacks and a first aid kit. Now that the car is all prepped it is important to be well rested before you get behind the wheel. You want to make sure that you are at your highest level of alertness when driving. Starting out as early in the morning as possible is recommended. It is much easier and safer to drive in the daylight than at night.

Having an AAA membership card is always a good thing to have. The member ship will provide you with twenty-four hour roadside assistance should you encounter any car problems. When you hit the expressway and are cruising it is nice to hit the cruise control and rest your feet a little but it can also have the reverse effect and lull you into a more laid back and relaxed state. I would probably avoid using the cruise control feature just for that reason, it is important to be ready for anything that might happen and having said that your foot should be on the gas pedal and ready to hit the brake pedal at any moment if needed. When on the expressway do not tailgate and if someone is tailgating you safely switch lanes whenever possible and let them pass. It is common sense to know that the more distance you have from the car in front of you the easier it is to brake or avoid an accident should anything unexpected happen.

As fast as it would be to drive straight to your destination, it is very important to stop every so often. Get out of the car and stretch your legs out. Get a drink. Eat something or use the restroom if needed. If you find that your eyes are burning are you are really fatigued, take a nap. The last thing you want is to fall asleep behind the wheel. Now is also the time to check the car and make sure everything is still running properly and fill up on gas if necessary.

Despite the hours on the road, a road trip can be a fun experience. So remember to just enjoy the journey and drive safely.
