Statistics show Wyoming has a lower than national average of residents who are over the age of 65. At present 12 % of Wyoming residents are elderly. And it is expected in the coming years that the numbers will increase, which as a result, the need for assisted living and long term care in the state rises as well.

LTC in Wyoming come in three different types of care facilities, namely, Skilled Nursing Care, Intermediate Nursing Care and Custodial Care. People definitely have their options but this availability, in reality, comes with a price which also means actual costs for future years will be substantially be higher due to inflation and other supporting factors.

In Wyoming, a Skilled Nursing Care is needed for medical conditions that require attention by trained medical personnel such as nurses and physiotherapists. This type of care is available 24 hours a day, is ordered by a physician, and usually involves a treatment plan. The Intermediate Nursing Care is necessary for conditions that require daily supervision. It is less specialized and require fewer interventions to quality care and usually essential for a longer period of time.

While, Custodial Care assists a person in daily activities - includes assistance with eating, bathing, and other routine activities. Among these three types of care, it is less complicated and can be provided at home or in an adult day care anytime.

These are the brief definitions stated in the 2010 Buyer's Guide to Long-Term Care Insurance which was released by the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Wyoming State Health Insurance to help as a buyer's guide' in deciding which LTCi to acquire.

This buyer's guide also pointed out that studies show two out of five people over age 65 are more likely to enter a nursing home for at least one day. And, at some point in time, one percent of all people between the ages of 64 and 74 reside in a nursing home. In fact, this percentage raises depending on the age which results to higher chances of individuals needing home health care as well.

As the demand for LTC continues to grow, the costs alongside with it tend to get very expensive depending upon the type and amount of care received and the setting in which it is received. Normally, almost half of the people receiving long term care pay for it by themselves. Government programs, like Medicaid, helps lessen the expenditures but the grant remains very limited.

Thus, also serving as an alternative, Wyoming's Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2008 was designed to encourage and reward a Wyoming consumer who takes an active role in planning ahead for his/her future long-term care needs. The Partnership allows consumers to maintain a certain level of asset protection. For every dollar that a Partnership-qualified policy pays out in benefits, one dollar of personal assets can be protected should the consumer qualify and apply for long-term care covered services under the state's Medicaid (Equality Care) program.
