According to a recent study children are getting less and less sleep due to exposure

to increased amounts of early evening light which delays the release of nocturnal melatonin, a chemical which the body releases to tell the brain that it's ready for bed. Not only does this daylight play with our nocturnal melatonin but in turn it can make it difficult for teenagers and young people to fall asleep at a decent hour, leading to difficulty getting up in the morning, lapses in concentration, irritability, inability to take in and retain knowledge at school, college or university and in severe cases, depression and mental health problems.

So we should be willing the onset of winter and less daylight hours the shorter days bring, either that or we should invest in blackout blinds and create atmospheres which are conducive to sleep. Creating dark and relaxing environments will help the body to produce nocturnal melatonin at the right times, meaning people can go to sleep at a reasonable hour and can therefore wake up refreshed and ready to face the day.

Apart from blackout blinds and the importance of creating a quiet, calm and relaxing atmosphere, it's important to equip your bedroom correctly, to give yourself and your body the best chance of a disturbance-free eight hours. The most important things in the bedroom are the bed frame and base, the mattress, the pillows, the bedding and the ventilation and if you can get all of these things right you'll be on your way to a great night's sleep, every night.

Beds come in all sorts of shapes and sizes but the ones you'll be interested in will be single beds, double beds and king size beds and these are available in large quantities online. The important thing is to choose a combination that suits you, your posture and the way you like to sleep so if you've got a bad back, you'll want to choose a bed and mattress combination which offer you a good level of support but which keep your spine in line all the way along. Mattresses that are too soft can mean too little support and can cause neck, back, shoulder and hip pain and a mattress which is too hard can create pressure points and pain too.


Create a relaxing environment and choose the right bed and mattress and you'll soon be onto a better balance of waking and sleeping hours.
