, or bought one- proper care is essential. Looking after your artwork well will help it last for a long time to come, and remain in premium condition. If you are an artist creating your own masterpiece make sure that you purchase a canvas that is of a high quality to work with - to avoid faults and failings on behalf of the canvas. Minimise Wear And Tear

Once you have finished a work, or brought it home from the gallery, try to minimise physical contact with the piece. Unprimed canvases are especially sensitive to dirt or finger prints, so make sure to be cautious when holding them. Paintings should be hung high enough to be kept away from day to day wear and tear, especially if you have pets or young children. If you need to keep a painting in storage wrap it well, to avoid scratches from contact with other objects.

Hang Properly

Artworks should be hung on sturdy hardware, to avoid expensive and heartbreaking falls. Consider size and weight of your canvas when considering the best methods of hanging your artwork. Brackets should be mounted under heavier works to bear extra weight. Check hanging devices periodically, to ensure they are still in good condition, and have not moved from their initial place. Don't wait until your painting has fallen down to find out that the wire was worn down, or the screws had come loose!

Keep Dry And Cool

Paintings should be kept in dry and cool areas of your home, whether they are being stored or showcased. Don't hang a painting above a heat source as it may soften the paint and result in trapped dirt and grime. You should also keep paintings away from sources of moisture, such as on walls adjoining bathrooms or even kitchens. When storing paintings make sure they have room to breathe, and won't be subject to extreme heat or changes in temperature.

Clean Well

Your painting can and should be cleaned, to remove dust and grime. However, before you clean a painting make sure there is no loose or flaking paint. Soft artist brushes are the best tool to use to clean an artwork. Do not use a damp cloth. Keep in mind when creating your own artworks that laminated or varnished works are easiest to clean.
