Hey guys! I've got a quick question for you: How do you motivate the hell out of your team?

You know they're good. You know you've got the best technical team around. You know your writers can give you kickass content. You know your marketing guys can get your product through your audience.

Problem is, they're just giving you mediocre performance. They're not giving it their best. They're approaching it as any regular job. You know they're capable of giving more, but you're just at a loss as to how to squeeze it out of them.

Well, you've got to look inward first. How are you managing your team? Perhaps you've neglected to give credit where credit is due. Perhaps you've treated them as subordinates and not as members of a team. Perhaps you've set unreasonable demands. Believe me man, when your workers aren't performing as well as they should, most of time, the reason is you or more aptly, your leadership style.

No one wants to work for a trying-hard know-it-all or worse, a ruthless authoritarian. If you're operating on this level, you're going to end up looking like a selfish rat to your employees. You are going to put your interest above theirs all the time.

This kind of leadership isn't going to be worth crap. If your employees aren't going to feel that they are a part of your company, if they feel that they aren't given the chance to show their creativity and if they feel stifled by your unreasonable demands, they're only going to be half-hearted about their jobs. They're not going to give you the best of what they've gotand most of the time, their best is what's going to propel your biz forward.

You don't want mere compliance from your team. You want commitment. You want them to feel for you and feel for your company. You've got to make them feel part of your team so they can empathize with its success and defeats. If you take the time to listen to them, to give a pat on the back when it is due, to be reasonable in all that you ask them to do, you're going to see their real talent shine forth.

If your team isn't giving you their all, and you know that they're capable of doing so, perhaps it's time for you to look inward.
