Many believers, of many different faiths, acknowledge that God is an integral part of their lives. He is omnipresent, protecting us from harm and guiding us to His will. However, can anyone truly say that they've seen God? In J. Larry Nance's compilation of poetry, Universe, one of the key points is the shortcoming of religion, and the lack of answers we find in contemporary society.

"Look at Quarks," located on page 257 of Universe is a fascinating display of the power of words and poetry. Using parallelism and rhythmic structure, Nance conveys one simple point: why is the concept of God such a mystery after all?

See how the baby grows,

and God isn't there.

There, the geese flies and

The elephant roams,

and God isn't there.

When the storm comes,

And the season's change,

God isn't there.

The earth flies in its

Orbit, and God isn't there.

Watch the Rosette Nebula,

M51 spin, pulsar's wink,

And the edge of the universe

Expand, and God isn't

there.

God in nature is the

Perfumed scent of a

Woman passed by.

The passage is self-explanatory. God has revealed himself in all of nature, from the atom to the full expanse of the universe. The phrase "God isn't there" begs the response, "but He was there." The elephant in the room here is "how could all this be if He weren't?" Here the author suggests that everything we see around us and beyond is evidence of the "Perfumed scent of a Woman passed by."

One's belief in God is likened to knowing that a perfumed woman has just passed near; we know she was here even though we do not see her now. The more evidence we experience, the less faith is needed to conclude what we know.

Nance's Universe will take the reader on a poetic journey through the cosmos, asking and answering questions like why are we here? This is a beautiful resource for anyone who has ever asked the bigger questions of life.
