Finding The Right Location

Top of the list is to find the best location for your Bonsai plant. Pick a spot that doesn't deviate in temperature, somewhere without any draughts. Bonsai trees like to see some sunlight for at least a few hours of the day, but try and avoid putting your tree in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Intense heat will dehydrate your Bonsai very quickly, dehydration is the biggest killer of Bonsai trees, so try not to expose your plant to too much direct sunlight.

Watering Your Bonsai

Opinions differ when it comes to watering a Bonsai tree, but making sure the soil is damp will keep most Bonsai happy. Do not over water your Bonsai tree as this can kill your Bonsai just as quickly as not watering it. Yellowing leaves are a common sign of over watering. Remember to feed your tree, once a fortnight in growing season, and once a month out of season. Bonsai fertilizers are available from most plant nurseries, but a simple liquid fertilizer is fine. Diluting your fertilizer by half of the instructions given will give you a good fertilizer suitable for use on your Bonsai tree.

Bonsai Pruning

Pruning a bonsai is a relatively simple process if you follow a few simple rules. The object of a Bonsai is to mirror nature in miniature, so bear this in mind when pruning. Every tree has a silhouette and shape unique to itself, so it should be easy to see where your tree needs trimming. You will find that new growth will tend to grow either up or out, so any new growth should be pruned following the silhouette of the tree.
