Gold jewellery is precious not only due to its value but often for the more sentimental attachments that it has for us. Whilst we want to make sure it continues to keep its lustre and shine, we also want to make sure it is long lasting. Many gold jewellery items are passed down the generations. However, it is important that we look after the jewellery as it can easily be scratched or damaged in a way that is permanent. Here are a few considerations to make sure your jewellery is always shown off to best effect and is kept in the best possible condition for years to come.
Removal
Some pieces of jewellery are kept on all the time regardless of the task we are doing which not only increases the chances of loss but also the opportunity for serious damage. This is often the case for wedding rings or bracelets with similar sentimental value. However, some manual chores or more rigorous outdoor pursuits can expose jewellery to greater risk of damage particularly scratches or breaks. It is always best to remove jewellery when involved in cleaning activities as many household cleaning products contain chemicals or acids that can be particularly damaging. Chlorine is a specific problem and therefore it is important to remove jewellery before using a swimming pool or Jacuzzi. If jewellery is exposed to chlorine on a regular basis then the damage is likely to be permanent.
If you can't remove the jewellery when cleaning, then it is a good idea to use rubber gloves to avoid the exposure to the harmful chemicals kinder on the hands too.
Storage
If you do remove jewellery temporarily for say cleaning, then it is a good idea to have some regular place to leave it. A ring stand by the sink is a good idea. It not only means you will know where you left it but it avoids the possibility of the ring being knocked down the sink how many times does that happen?. If you are out and about then keep your jewellery in a soft jewellery pouch or otherwise a tissue.
For more permanent storage, a traditional jewellery box is recommended. This would normally have separate compartments for the different pieces which avoid contact between metals and diamonds that may scratch the gold. It also helps to avoid those tangles you get with chains and bracelets. The main thing is to avoid storing in glass or metal containers which can cause damage. Having a regular storage place removes the possibility of misplacing a beloved jewellery item.
Cleaning
You can clean gold jewellery in lukewarm soapy water using a soft cloth or brush. You need to make sure it is rinsed thoroughly afterwards and dried and buffed with a lint free cloth. You can also buy non abrasive jewellery cleaners for the purpose. It is a good idea to get your jewellery professionally cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaning process. Not only will they bring back new lustre and shine to your jewellery but they will also inspect it for any damage. Broken or damaged clasps of settings can mean you lose your jewellery at some stage or a precious diamond. Insurance companies may not pay out if they believe that the item had not been maintained properly.
