Looking At The Classic Kombi

The Kombi, dubbed the Volkswagen Type Two Transporter

, was the second auto line announced by German automaker Volkswagen. The Type two is the precursor of the modern cargo and passenger vans. The Type 2 procreated a number of imitators, both in the United States and Europe, including the Dodge A100, and the Corvair 95 Corvan, the last even embracing the Type twos rear-engine configuration. As of January 2010, updated versions of this line are produced for international markets, both as a passenger and cargo van, and as a pickup truck. It is also unofficially known as a microbus, a minibus or hippie van, the latter due to its attractiveness with the 1960s counterculture movement.

This movement in the 1960s was a real push for the hippie van around the era of really very heavy Pot smoking and Woodstock with the intention of world peace for all. This brotherly love was a part of the history that defines us as a nation and will continue to be a free time indeed. It seems like the Kombi got caught in the mix of the culture at the time and was a symbol of the American freedom of the day.

The original idea for the VW Beetle, or what is also known as the VW Bug, came from Adolf Hitler. It is said that he had the idea of a peoples car in 1924 while he was in prison. He wanted a car that anyone could afford, and also to help with the unemployment problem that existed in post WW1 Germany. In 1933 the Nazi party came to power and Hitler raised the issue of building special roads for the peoples car, and in 1933 the government began a program of construction of autobahns for German drivers. Volkswagen (VW) is the German name for peoples car. Who would have thought that a car invented under him would remain a timeless classic for all these years, and to also have an all new Volkswagen bug available proves it more.

Looking at the history of the Kombi in the American culture that we call home, there will always be someone out there restoring this great van of yesteryear.
