Looking Milan through the Window of History and Culture

Considered a millennial city that dates back to the 6th century BC, Milan has a lot to offer in terms of history and culture. it was first founded the Celts then later on the Romans took over and named it the Mediolanum, in the 5th century however, the Huns took over and in the periods between the middle ages, renaissance and up to the date, it has grown to become one of the what it is today in Europe, an important financial center. All the groups that have passed through this city have left their mark.

During the middle ages, even after the fall of Roman Empire, the city continued to flourish making it a reference on Peninsula. It is important to note that the Byzantines, Ostrogoths and the Heruli were among the groups that brought the city back on its feet after it was plundered by the Huns. However, the real developments were noted at the end of the 8th century when the Charlemagne's troops got into the city and overthrew the Lombard's who were there during the 5th century. During this time, the church was overpowered by nobility and this was considered to be the driving force behind the economical growth.

In the 6th century however, it was a battlefield once again as Fredrick I Barbarossa fought against the Lombard cities for control. Later own the city was taken over by Visconti family and their reign continued through the 14th and 15th century, which are considered to be the most prosperous times of the renaissance period. This period is also marked by great artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci. However, the reign of the Visconti was short lived as the city fell into Spanish hands who ruled for another 100 years. During the 18th century it was signed off to Austria in what was the Utrech treaty

It is the geographical locality of the city that has made it a major stop point for historical figures through the years and it is for this reason too that it has adopted all the cultures that have gone through the city. During the 20th century, it has passed off as the most important city that is prosperous as well. What is more, it is here that socialism started and it is also identified with resistance of the Second World War. Other factors and traditions that make it stand out is the fact that it is a university town, and a city that offers all types of housing ranging from hostels, houses, apartments and hotels among others.
