This past weekend I was cleaning the house and as I was dusting the one modern ceiling
lamp I have installed in the dining room, I got to do some deep thinking. I thought about how I got to this point in my life. That last statement sounds a bit ominous and negative but I assure you it is not. It is something about the modern lighting that makes think about a lot of stuff. Sounds strange, but it is the little things like cleaning a lamp or smelling a whiff of perfume that can get you to go into some deep thinking.
I remember when my family first got this house. It was old - as were most of the other houses on the block - and so were many of the furniture and fixtures that were left behind by the previous owners. Naturally we kept what we could and replaced some of the old lighting with modern light fixtures. We repainted some of the walls, installed some carpeting, and did some remodeling which worked out really well. Pretty much going from room to room we did that for the entire house. My family is weird in that we had a specific way that our house had to be. We always wanted it to be visually appealing to visitors and overnight guests, and what better way to wow them than by using modern light fixtures?
I have a lot of memories living in this house; I spent well over a decade in it. One of the fondest memories I ever had in that house were the times I would take care of my nieces and watch over them as they ran around the house. As the years went by I saw them grow up and go to school and bring back homework for me to check. We would sit at the desk in my room with the standing floor lamp on and either one or two of them would be working. Another memory I enjoy having - and this was long after my siblings move away with my nieces - was having some friends over and drinking some nice scotch whiskey under the very same modern ceiling lamp.
It is kind of hard to imagine metal lighting fixtures invoking such vivid memories but I guess stranger things have happened. It goes to show that each and every part of the house is as important as the house in its entirety.
