Looking Younger With Whiter Teeth: At Home Or In-office?
In the last twenty years, teeth whitening has become a popular cosmetic procedure
. What was once the domain of celebrities and public personalities has become attainable for us common folk as well. So what is the best way to get whiter teeth and a younger smile?
HOW DO TEETH GET STAINED?
There are several factors that contribute to the staining of teeth. Your teeth probably come into contact with many staining agents everyday; coffee, pop, smoke, wine and other dark-coloured foods and beverages. All of these normal, everyday things can cause your teeth to darken over time.
TYPES OF STAINS
There are two different types of stains: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic stains refer to the yellowing of the inner tooth, or dentin. Intrinsic stains can be caused by age, nerve or blood vessel damage, and fluorosis (fluoride damage) and cannot be removed with teeth whitening products.
Extrinsic stains are those that are caused by environmental factors, shall we say: coffee, pop, etc and are a prime candidate for stain removal.
AT-HOME WHITENING
At-home
stain removal products are extremely popular and are somewhat effective. They are available over-the-counter and are generally much more affordable that cosmetic dentistry. These methods usually involve adhesive strips or gels, gums and toothpaste with peroxide or baking soda or a combination of the two. While cheaper, these methods are time consuming and not nearly as effective as chairside teeth whitening in the dentists office. If you are on a budget, however, this is the best route.
CHAIRSIDE WHITENING
If you are serious about brightening those pearly whites and having a dramatic, long-lasting effect, then this is the best option for you. In-office whitening is a quick and easy way to a whiter, brighter smile. In as little as one hour, the dentist can complete your whitening treatment.
During your appointment, you will have a protective solution put over your gums, and then have a gel that typically contains peroxide placed over your teeth. Then, a laser or no-heat activated lamp is aimed at your teeth and you can relax. There are no common side effects other that a slight gum sensitivity that can last for a couple of days, and the dentist will send you home with some whitening solution for your use for a couple of weeks to complete your transformation.
In-office treatments are definitely more expensive, but the results are dramatic and immediate. Your teeth can be up to 10 shades whiter in just the one visit. If you are serious about finding the
best teeth whitener, this is the safest, most effective route.
