Getting its start in Brooklyn, New York back in 1883
, you may not know all of the history that surrounds the team currently recognized as the Los Angeles Dodgers but it is a colorful past that accompanies this team that has been around for quite some time. The team names alone stretch a country mile long and begin with the first name given to the Brooklyn based team which was the Brooklyn Atlantics. This name would only be retained for a year, at which time the name changed to the Brooklyn Grays. In 1888, the team became known as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Interestingly enough, the team switched names and returned to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms name again from 1896 to 1898.
In the interim of 1891 to 1895, the team was known as the Brooklyn grooms. In 1899, the name changed to the Brooklyn Superbas and lasted until 1910. The Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers was a short lived name that lasted from 1911 to 1912. The Brooklyn Dodgers name lasted even less time, only for 1913. In 1914, the team became known as the Brooklyn Robins. The final Brooklyn based name for the team was the Brooklyn Dodgers, which was from 1932 to 1957.
As if the multitude of name changes were not enough, the team has also been known by nicknames that include The Boys in Blue, Blue Crew, The Bums and Blue Wrecking Crew. Dodger blue and white are the team colors and to date, the retired numbers include 1, 2, 3, 19, 20, 24, 32, 39, 53 and 42 for Jackie Robinson. With such a longstanding history, there are a variety of points that bond fans to the Los Angeles Dodgers whether you appreciate their history before or after their move to Los Angeles.
When it comes to historical statistics, you can go really far back with this team as well. With Jackie Robinson on the roster, this team was the first team in the MLB to start an African American player during the 20th century. The Los Angeles Dodgers hold the record for being the first team to win consecutive championships in more than one league during the years of 1889 to 1890. In 1941, the team first began using batting helmets. In 1958, the Dodgers became the first West Coast team at the same time as their rivals the San Francisco Giants.
The list of first doesn't end there. In 1998, The Dodgers became the first team in the Major League to start up an office in Asia. In 1958, they set a record by hosting the largest crowd for a home opener game with 78,762 patrons in attendance. More attendance records were set in 2008 when they achieved a then world record of 115,300 for just one game. Most recently, the Los Angeles Dodgers set a record in 2009 for a 13-0 home start.
All home games for the Los Angeles Dodgers are currently played at Dodger Stadium, which is also known as Chavez Ravine. Constructed broke in 1959 but the venue did not open until 1962. Located at 1000 Elysian Park Avenue in Los Angeles, California, the playing surface is Santa Ana Bermuda grass and seating capacity is 56,000. Original patrons in addition to the Los Angeles Dodgers included the Los Angeles Angels, a previous team in the MLB before the arrival of the Dodgers.
Many significant baseball events have been held at the stadium including the 2009 World Baseball Classic and concerts for some of the biggest names in entertainment such as Madonna, U2 and the Backstreet Boys. With renovations underway in 2010, luxury suites and club seats will increase from respective current numbers of 68 and 2,098.
