Losing Your Driving Licence

Whether you have been caught speeding, drink driving or are possibly going to lose your driving licence through a totting up offence

, what are the likely consequences for you? In this article we look at what can happen if you fail to hold onto your driving licence, and what action you can take to prevent this from happening.

1. Your Career. Usually the biggest problem is your career or job. The majority of people rely on their own transport to take them to and from work. Of course many others rely on a car or lorry to complete their day to day job. If you suddenly lose access to your vehicle, you may well also lose your job. Clearly the consequences at anytime are bad, but during a recession (or coming out of one) they can be even more serious.

If you are faced with a ban you should seek expert legal advice to help you avoid losing your licence, or at least to minimise the impact. However, if you have already received a ban one option could be for you to pay a driver to ensure you can carry out your role. Whilst this might seem an expensive option, losing your job will be far more costly in the longterm.

2. Your Social Life. As with anything, it is not until we lose it that we realise the serious consequences of the loss of it. If you have ever badly bruised or broken a hand or leg you will understand this. Your immobility leaves you frustrated. Even if you only injure a thumb or a big toe you suddenly realise its importance in all of your mobility.

It is the same if you suddenly cannot drive anywhere. Picking up the weekly shopping, running the children to and from events, going to see friends etc all become much more of an ordeal. If you have a partner they will soon feel the extra impact caused by the loss of your licence.

3. Going For A Drive. Does anyone do this anymore? People often used to just "go for a drive" to blow away the cobwebs, change the scenery or just to get out of the house. Everyone used to do this. Whether environmental issues prevent this being acceptable now, or simply the high fuel costs, one thing is for sure, you cannot "go for a drive" if you have lost your licence.

Summary. Prevention is far better than cure, so we urge you to obey the speed limits, not to drink and drive and not to take any unnecessary risks when driving your car. However, if you fall foul of the law you must ensure that you are assisted by expert driving offences solicitors who will fight hard for you to keep your driving licence if they can, or to minimise the length of any ban.
