Losing the FIFA World cup bid doesn't mean that the choice was corrupt and fixed

At the time, it was a surprise that England didn't win the 2018 FIFA world cup bid, it's surprising in the sense that we are ready and fully prepared to be able to hold the event. Above this though was the smokescreen placed in front of us by the media an those involved in the FA, This faade gave us the impression that it wasn't just inevitable, but that it was a certainty that we would win the bid.

There is a main underlying issue though, FIFA's aims in regards to hosting of a world extend far beyond, who has the capability at the moment to hold the games, and who have the most football rich history.

They state that their intentions are to 'Develop the game, touch the world, build a better future'. The following paragraph summarises perfectly why we lost the bid. "This responsibility does not end with organising the FIFA World Cup. (extends to) developing the game around the world and to bringing hope to those less privileged. This is what we believe is the very essence of fair play and solidarity." It's not about what country has the best stadium, or the most suitable climate or the most well recognised individuals. It's about opportunities and hope for the future. It's as if those in the FA who we're bidding for the tournament did not read this vital founding principle of FIFA.

Why can't we just be honourable in defeat, like Atlanta, who lost their bid for the 2022 tournament and accept and respect the governing bodies decision? We have Piers Morgan who has somehow become our representive and authority in American of all things British, popping up on CNN expressing his disappointment at Russia's success, why do we have this attitude that we are a far superior nation and that anyone else is unworthy of holding such an event.

We've already had we have the accusations of corruption and deception from the media and the FA toward FIFA in the recent past, yet these have continued and the smallest hint of someone to blame has been leapt at and been placed under a microscope. Despite this though the FA participated in the same foul play, to a much lesser extent to admittedly, if the allegations are true, than the countries accused of bribing FIFA. Boris Johnson has publically banished Sepp Blatter from staying in "The Dorchester" during the Olympics, thus revoking his original all expenses paid invite to stay there, surely this promise originally was a bribe and a layer of icing upon the hypothetical world cup bid cake.

As a nation, we need to learn that can't throw a tantrum when something doesn't go our way. Yes it is true that we are fully prepared to hold the world cup, we could easily have the procedures and facilities set up within in a month. We're already in a perfect position. Which is the issue, it'll be of no major benefit to us, we have the Olympics and that's more than enough to encourage the youth of today to get involved in sports and fitness training.

We are already a developed country, whereas Russia needs to be given a chance on the global platform, it needs more energy and reason to develop, it needs a major impetus to do so. If it didn't have a world cup, there would be no need to build new facilities and stadium; there'd be no opportunity for sporting development. We don't need this development, it's about long term impact the games will have and not just the "quality" of the month long games. It's impact needs to be measured in years, and will we genuinely notice any difference in our footballing facilitates if we did hold the tournament?

It's not like we haven't held any sporting events recently, we haven't been neglected or ignored, we've had the commonwealth games in Manchester, the Euro 1996 Championship was held here, we have the Olympics very shortly. When did Russia last hold a large international sporting event?

There's also the impression and the attitude that no other country is as advanced and developed as us, and also the feeling that other countries do not deserve the tournament as much as we do. There has also been criticism toward Qatar holding the event in 2022, why are we being so negative?

If the event is about extravagance and putting on an incredible tournament, just look at the proposed designs of the Qatari stadiums, they're unique and ambitious, and being in the middle east, we know they'll get built, and it'll be on time, and if there are concerns about the workers that are employed to work there, firstly it's not the United Arab Emirates, every country needs to be judges separately and not just grouped together. Qatar has stricter laws upon it's workers, and we have to be reminded that we have just had the Commonwealth Games in India and the Olympics in china, two countries that aren't renowned for their workers rights. It doesn't have a perfect system in regards to human rights, it is like most countries in that region, flawed and not entirely enforced but it's by no means worse than the treatment of workers in India and China, not that this makes it excusable. It'll be interesting to bring the World Cup to an Islamic country, it will in fact be an honour for them to be considered let alone actually chosen. It's impact on relations between the Middle East and the rest of the world will be incredibly positive, it'll give the world a chance to experience the other side of an Islamic nation, that of incredible architecture, endless ambition and dedication to superior hospitality. I also feel comfortable in making the assumption that crime levels will be unprecedentedly low in comparison to for example, the South African football World Cup tournament.

Many critics have been complaining about the heat that there will be in the temperate Qatari summer, this is of course a valid issue, but they have already stated that they will provide cooling facilities and that they have the capability to cool the stadium and pitches, they are not going to over look the main issue that they have in the holding of the games.

We have to as a nation, begin to look at the bigger international picture, we have to be accepting and respectful of other's success and be humble in their defeats. We have to accept that sometimes, decisions don't go in our favour. It's not noble or honourable to attack and criticise if we don't get our way. Surely it's not too difficult to accept that one, either they've made mistakes, or they just didn't fill the criteria..
