Low Vision Aids

Low vision is a condition that is rapidly increasing in older Americans

. Research suggests that by the year 2020, 1 in every 28 adults will suffer from this situation. It is a horrible experience to slow lose your sight, as you have depended on it all of your life. Many of these people can no longer drive, read, or do anything at all without vision aids.

You may be wondering exactly what is considered to be low vision. The Natural Eye Institute states that it happens when a person's impaired sight cannot be corrected with any interventions, such as eyeglasses, surgery, or medication. It is normal to experience some loss of vision as you get older, but this loss is not included in the "low vision" realm. Vision loss due to diseases such as diabetes, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, as well as that caused by birth defects is considered to be bad vision.

Work is being done to enhance the technology of vision aids. Now, it is very rare to reinstate the vision of someone who has gone completely blind. However, those who have suffered from a smaller amount of vision loss can sometimes be assisted with these aids. These are the people that can still carry out daily tasks, but with the help of a machine or other device.

Many watches on the market today are said to be a vision aids. These include those that speak the time when a button is pressed. Many of these also have a feature that allows the user to set an alarm. The time will then be read aloud when the alarm goes off. Braille watches are also available to those that are considered legally blind. Watches for the blind can be found in various styles, such as wristwatches and pocket watches.

Low vision magnifiers can also be helpful to those that have difficulty seeing. These devices allow people who have difficulty seeing to be able to read. There are hand held versions that people can take with them, as well as larger machines that work on a table. They work well for those going shopping with a list, reading nutrition labels, and ordering from a menu at a restaurant.

As you can see, it is a diagnosis that is currently on the rise. Technology is being studied to enable these people to still be able to see, despite the loss of vision. Low vision aids such as watches and magnifiers will allow many of these people to still be able to read and see small print. Hopefully, as we move forward, the vision supplements will be able to help those that are experiencing a total loss of vision.
