. But when it comes to the air you breathe inside your home, you can control these ones. Research says that indoor air is three times more toxic than the air we breathe outside. To protect our health, we must avoid this. One way of doing so is making use of low VOC paints.

Low VOC paints are paints that contain volatile organic compounds at low levels - the desired and safe level for this is fifty grams per liter and below. Beyond this stated VOC level, the paint is already hazardous to both your health and the environment. What are volatile organic compounds anyway? These are organic chemical compounds that have significant vapor pressures. These vapor pressures are dangerous to the environment and the health of people. The regulated VOCs are those of the anthropogenic type. The effects of these compounds are not seen immediately but these can be chronic. Some health problems associated with VOCs are respiratory diseases, allergies and immune system disorders. These disorders may be mild but an attack can be fatal.

Because of the harmful effects of VOCs, researchers came up with low VOC paints. Natural raw materials are now being preferred in the manufacture of paints such as chalk, pine trees, milk proteins, mineral oils, clay, plant dyes, plant oils, and others. Milk paints are now gaining popularity in the market. This is a type of paint that is totally free from volatile organic compounds, lead, mercury, radioactive materials, plastics, petroleum by-products, synthetic preservatives and strong odors. These low VOC paints are perfectly safe for everyone, including children and pregnant women, and those who have diseases involving the respiratory and immune systems.

Aside from low VOC paints, there are also paint strippers that contain no volatile organic compounds. The previous paint stripper products were usually carcinogenic, since they contain methylene chloride. Now, biodegradable paint strippers are now available. Like the low VOC paints, these are also water-soluble, low caustic and are lowtoxic. Unlike before, the active ingredient for this product is an organic solvent which is N-Methylpyrrolidone.

Being health conscious does not necessarily mean you have to concentrate on your diet and lifestyle. You also need to consider your environment for this is one of the main sources of medical diseases. When you can control something, then do it. Instead of inhaling the hazardous fumes of conventional paints, go for the safe low VOC paints
