Lower Back Pain: Causes Behind It

Suffering from lower back pain is a very common issue for millions of people in the US. At some point in their lives people suffer from lower back pain. Causes behind such pain are several. According to a recent survey in San Diego, US, 80% of the population at some time or other, suffer from acute low back pain. Though exercise therapy is considered as one of the few effective treatments, research studies have also revealed that this remedy is vastly underutilized. From anatomical perspective, the back is divided into two parts- upper back and lower back. The region which is made up of 5 lumbar vertebrae, the sacrum and the coccyx, is called the lower back. The lumbar region supports a good deal of human body's weight. Some of the causes behind the pain are as follows: 1. Age: With increasing age the strength and flexibility of bones and muscles deteriorates. The discs in the vertebral column lose their cerebrospinal fluid and elasticity. This adversely affects their ability to provide support and cushion to the spinal cord. 2. Obesity: Excessive weight gain due to obesity or pregnancy can also cause posture problem. As a result, it exerts pressure on the muscles of the back and cause strain on them. Hence, lower back pain starts. 3. Degeneration of bones: Degeneration of bones due to increasing age or calcium deficiency may lead to bone diseases like osteoporosis, arthritis, viral infections in the joints and other abnormal conditions in the spinal column. 4. Lifting heavy objects: If an old or a weak person tries to lift anything that is too heavy for him, his muscles may experience strain, spasm or sprain, which will lead to back pain. 5. Spraining of muscles and tissues: Back pain also occurs if tissues and muscles get over stretched or sprained. 6. Abdominal disorder: One of the lower back pain causes is the lower abdominal or kidney disorders. This happens as these organs are connected by common nerves. As soon as a person begins to have lower back pain, cause behind it should be determined properly by doctors only. One should not neglect it and take proper medication along with rest and do back exercises.
