Lowering Big Rig Repair Costs
If you drive on any of the interstate highways that crisscross the country you will
see convoys of semi trucks transporting goods and materials from one city to the next. Even if you limit your travel to the close proximity of the city and suburbs, the chances are that you will come across a diesel tractor trailer or two on your daily commute. These heavy haulers have been designed to carry loads from one place to the next and continuously operate without taking a rest. Driving tens of thousands of miles each month the big rigs are expected to run smoothly as they transport raw materials and manufactured products all over the country.
In reality the diesel engines that power these semi trucks are more efficient and reliable than the standard passenger car, however just like any automobile they do require regular maintenance and repair. Even with the oil changes that keep America's over-the-road transportation system moving there are times when an engine needs some attention to replace a damaged or worn component. Distributor wiring harnesses, spark plugs, alternators, or pistons and crank shafts may need to be swapped out and exchanged before a truck can be put out onto the highway after breaking down on the road.
With some of the new elements that are needed to keep the big rigs operating, costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars some mechanics and service technicians that work on fleet vehicles are turning to used semi truck parts to lower their operating costs and maintain the engines of the workhorses that travel the American roadways. By finding refurbished parts that can handle the constant conditions of the movement of the engine, fleet managers are able to save money for the business owners and still provide quality parts for the mechanics to work with.
Because diesel engines are different than conventional gasoline motors they are able to run longer and work harder than the engines that are found in cars. In many cases, with proper care a diesel motor will last up to 400,000 miles doubling that of any automobile on the road. Even when being retired from service many components of the diesel can be salvaged, inspected and refurbished to be used in semi trucks that have need of a new part for the engine compartment. By finding retailers that buy up older model rigs and taking the usable parts from the engine, mechanics and fleet managers are able to keep the trucks that they care for running for many more miles to come.
