Last year she suffered a shock second round defeat to the unheralded Carla Suarez Navarro. Safarova is the sort of player who could cause a rusty Williams some serious problems.

The Czech is one of the most dangerous floaters in the draw and comes into the tournament on good form after pushing Kim Clijsters right to the wire in Brisbane just over a week ago.

However Venus has beaten her in all three of their previous matches, twice on clay last year. They played at the French Open and Venus was very lucky to scrape through 7-5 in the third set.

On faster hard courts it may be a different story.
