Lungeing Your Horse: Part 2

To prepare yourself and your horse for lungeing you'll require the following tools: splint boots with bell boots/wraps, a correctly fitted halter and a sturdy unge line, as well as a lightweight lunge whip you can work with easily. The wraps or boots will keep your horse from injuring herself should she overextend and bang her hooves together. What you don't need is for your horse to hurt itself and then remember the experience as being a negative one. The halter and lunge line will allow you to control your horse's direction and distance away fom you. Think of your lunge whip as a supplement to your voice and hand gesutres - it's a tool to direct and motivate your horse, never to punish him.

A round pen is the best place to lunge your horse, but any enlclosed space with flat gronud will work, especially if the eclosure has rounded corners. Remember the goal is to keep control of your horse at all times, so don't try this in an area without fencing.

When you start your lesson, always start in one direction and stick to it. If you choose to work on the left side, then always hold your lead in the left hand with excess line in your right (and the whip as well, if you choose to use one) and keep all body positions the same. To get your horse moving to the left, lift your left hand and point in that direction, take a step or two in that direction yourself while waving the whip towards the horse's rear or spanking theg round behind him. If you horse keeps facing you then guide them forward by swinging your rope/whip toward their shoulder.

Now she's moving out in the direction you asked. Move with him, staying in the middle of the round pen with sufficient line played out. Keep the whip low or rope end low and walk quietly. The thing you want to teach the horse is that if YOUR feet are moving, his feet need to be moving. Stay behind her sholder to keep her moving forward. If you get in front of the withers, your horse may stop.

If your horse does stop, calmly keep moving and touch the whip or rope end to his hind legs to keep him moving until YOU stop your feet. This behavior will seem quite natural to your horse. It's very similar to a way one horse in a herd will stomp its feet and move off. All the other horses in the herd follow without question. The simply fall in line with the lead horse based on the herd pecking order. If you lunge in this manner, your horse will understand your body language almost immediately. It begins with your body language, then verbal cues, then light contact when necessary.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to remain patient and reward every effort by your horse to do the right thing. Celebrate even the smallest successes to keep from frustrating the horse or becoming discouraged yourself. Lungeing is an important training tool, which is why it is recommended by so many popular horse websites.
