Lures for Catching Bass, Crappie and Sunfish

A variety of lures are popular for catching largemouth bass

, smallmouth bass, rock bass, crappie, bluegill, shellcrackers and other members of the sunfish family. These include a mix of traditional fishing lures as well as new technology.

In addition to catching bass and sunfish, these same fishing lures catch other popular freshwater fish including pike, pickerel, musky, catfish, striped bass, white bass other species.

Soft plastic worms were among the original bass fishing lures. Since the early versions, literally thousands of variations have been produced. rigs include Texas, Carolina, floating and wacky rigs. These lures catch largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and rock bass as well as an occasional crappie.

Jerk baits are another type of soft plastics. These simple lures are rigged on an offset shank hook or jig head. They are available in sizes for catching the sunfish, smallmouth bass and lunker largemouth bass.


Spinners are a simple, traditional type of fishing lure. They feature a metal or synthetic body, a simple spinning blade and a trailing treble hook. These lures catch a wide range of species from pumpkinseed sunfish to smallmouth bass.

Jigs are among the oldest lures but are still very popular. These come in hundreds of styles including classic bucktails, feather jigs, soft bodied grubs, shad bodies, tubes, etc.

For targeting species of panfish such as white crappie, marabou jigs are some of the most well known and effective jigs used in freshwater fishing.

The jig and pig lure consists of a combination of a simple jig with a natural pork rind. This rig is popular in some areas for catching largemouth bass.

Poppers are another type of lure that remains popular. This family of lures share a hard body with cupped or wedge shaped mouth. Used near dusk or dawn, these surface lures draw vicious strikes from hungry bass.

Crank baits are effective lures for bass, crappie and sunfish. They lures come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the species of fish sought. Most float at rest and dive when retrieved. Crank baits share common characteristics such as a hard lip, multiple treble hooks.

Spoons are effective lures for catching bass, crappie, sunfish and other fish. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Spoons wobble or spin as they pass thru water. Depending on the type, spoons may be cast, trolled or jigged.

Soft bodied frog lures are among the most weedless of all rigs. The hooks are well concealed and they float on the surface, allowing anglers to cast into heavy vegetation where largemouth bass frequently lurk.


Tube lures feature a hollow tube which has tentacles on the rear. They are available in sizes from about an inch up to several inches in length. Small tubes are rigged on jig heads while larger versions are usually rigged on an offset shank hook similar to worm rigs.

Tube lures are used extensively for catching bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, crappie and other sunfish.
