Luxury Maldives Holidays
The Maldives, officially known as the Republic of Maldives
, is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean. It is made up of a chain of islands grouped into atolls, which spread over an area of roughly 90,000 square kilometres. The capital, and largest city in the Maldives is Mal, home to the main airport for the Maldives and it is generally from here that visitors to the islands are whisked away to their retreat.
There are a couple of ways to get to your resort, depending on its distance from the airport. You will most often have the choice between boat transfers and aeroplane transfers, though many prefer the aerial route as they find the views of the Maldives from the air are simply stunning. Beware however, that though you may travel by seaplane, your luggage will still travel by speed boat so you might arrive before it does. Bearing this in mind, make sure you take your sunglasses, camera, sun tan lotion and flip flops in your hand luggage if you do decide to travel this way.
On arrival at your Maldives resort, you'll have no problem settling in and being able to chill out. These islands really can be considered a haven away from modern day life as at most resorts, all comings and goings are by boat or seaplane, and people really only ever get around via foot or golf buggy once there. Food is fresh and the people are very accommodating, charming and friendly.
Diving and snorkelling are major attractions in the Maldives. Whether you have your PADI and want to go wreck diving, or you just enjoy strapping on a snorkel and drifting around just off shore there are resorts perfectly tailored to your needs. In fact, many of these island resorts are encircled by a reef which creates natural lagoons full of flickering fish. If you splash out on an over water bungalow which are available at many resorts, you'll have direct access to the water and can find all sorts of marine life just inches from your door.
It's a general rule of thumb that the more luxurious the resort, the better the spa, and the Maldives is home to some of the best spas in the world, including an underwater spa where you can enjoy your massage or treatment surrounded by an array of tropical fish. Or, you could try a specialist Ayurveda spa, which will specialise in traditional medicines from the Indian Ocean and aim to promote longevity, rejuvenation and relaxation in mind, body and soul. A sublime experience in one of these spas can leave you feeling completely relaxed and refreshed, ready to enjoy the rest of your holiday.
