LVN programs in California require students to study theory/didactic courses as well

as clinical/internship hours caring for clients in a clinical environment.Students studying in LVN class can expect to study fundamentals of nursing, anatomy and physiology, clinical nutrition and to spend a significant number of hours in the clinical laboratory.Clinical practicum in the clinical laboratory begins with thorough knowledge and ability to demonstrate infection control procedures such as distinguishing the difference between clean and sterile techniques. Students then move on to practice performing client transfers (from bed to chair, for example) as well as proper positioning of clients. Activities of daily living or ADL's include assisting with hygiene, basic skin care, oral care and prevention of pressure ulcers. Students also learn how to change an unoccupied bed, and an occupied bed and other basic nursing skills every nurse should know and be able to perform proficiently. After these basic skills are learned, the student nurse is taught how to take vital signs and understand the beginning interventions for what to do when abnormal vital signs are measured.The study of the nursing assessment allows the student to organize a head to toe assessment as well as a comprehensive (system-by-system) assessment of the client. Clinical lab also includes learning how to feed patients and how to collect specimens for diagnostic tests.LVN students learn how to perform correct medication calculations and administer intramural , subcutaneous, intramuscular and oral medications.Finally, LVN students in LVN class learn how to provide wound care and how to treat pressure ulcers.This completes the first foundation in preparing the student to work as a vocational nurse.

After students are successful in establishing the foundation of nursing care, they are introduced to medical-surgical nursing and pharmacology. Ideally, these courses are presented together, covering the path physiology of disease by body system, along with the medications currently used to treat specific disease processes.

After a thorough study of medical surgical nursing and pharmacology, students are introduced to specialty areas of nursing. These include obstetric nursing, pediatric nursing and psychiatric nursing. Clinical experiences in obstetric, pediatrics and psychiatric settings complement the theory/didactic LVN class to these areas of client care. Obstetric nursing includes learning about healthy and high-risk pregnancies. Care of the newborn is included and overlaps with the study of the high risk neonate which is covered in pediatric nursing class. Psychiatric nursing introduces the student to defense mechanisms, neuroses and psychoses. Clinical experiences for these specialty areas of nursing include work in the simulator laboratory, observation of normal growth and development, observation of special needs and the developmentally disabled child, field trips to California Medical Facility as well as Napa Valley Hospital and Sonoma Developmental Center.
