The Master of Philosophy (M Phil) is a postgraduate research degree worldwide
. It is a pre-doctorate degree course which is mainly based on research. M. Phil. is a special research degree and is awarded by certain Universities in specific fields. After M. Phil. students enroll for PhD program. An M. Phil. degree normally interests people who want to be into research or in teaching; however, people from various other fields and interests are also going for M. Phil degree these days. To be eligible for M. Phil. and PhD. programs you should have Masters Degree with 55 percent marks if you belong to general category and 50 percent marks if you belong to scheduled cast/scheduled tribe category. Some Universities offer M. Phil. with entrance test whereas some without any entrance test.

M Phil Programs normally consists of five components- Basic Courses, Auxiliary Courses, Optional Courses, and Survey of Literature & Dissertation. Basic courses provide the knowledge base in the theory and practice of research. Auxiliary Courses are specifically designed to impart/enhance the skills in the use of scholarly writing and computer applications. Optional courses have to be chosen by a student from the list of available courses for the particular program. The purpose of offering electives is to help extend or update knowledge in the discipline chosen for research. Through survey of literature the student is helped to familiarize with the literature available on the problem chosen for study and identify the gaps in it and formulate alternative hypotheses. Dissertation aims at providing student with an opportunity to practice the craft of research. To do this the student uses the knowledge acquired during the course work.
