MLA Guideline

The MLA is one of the many writing styles that are used in the writing scholarly literature within the research and academic fields. The MLA guideline dictates the manner in which MLA style papers are written and formatted. This MLA guideline was developed by the Modern Language Association in America. This style of formatting and citing literary and other forms of sources used within MLA style papers is mainly used in the fields of cultural, language and humanity studies. The MLA guideline offers details on formatting MLA style papers of an academic nature.

MLA style papers should adhere to the following basic format specifications. Firstly, the paper used for MLA style papers should be 11 by 8.5 inch in size and white in color. The printing on these papers should always be one sided. The work to be printed should fall within a margin of one inch all round the paper. MLA style papers should have all the first lines of their paragraphs indented by 0.5 inch (a tab key may normally be used in a word processor). All lines of a direct source quotation should be equally indented from the left, whilst the right margin remains un-altered. The text should a size of 12 point and it should be in Times New Roman typeface.

According to the MLA guideline MLA style papers have to be entirely double-spaced all through the text within the MLA style papers. Its common and allowed for writers of MLA style papers not to include title pages in their works, however; this not withstand if the assigning instructor requires the writers to include a title page. In this case it has to be done according to the specifications of the assigning tutor. If a title page of the MLA style papers has to be included, it should have the following details-the date of submission, the instructor's name, the author's name, and the course or unit number. The title should always be centered and it should neither be typed capital letters or underlined.Page numbers within all MLA style papers should be positioned at the upper corner of the paper on the right hand side. These numbers should flush the right one inch margin and be 0.5 inch from the upper margin. Tables and other illustration materials such as maps and drawings should be incorporated within the paper and closer to the text that they relate to. They should also be well labeled and their sources cited just below these tables and graphs or drawings.

Substantiation in MLA style papers requires the inclusion of the author and page or pages cited within parentheses in cases of in-text citations. The author's name and page number/s should not be separated by a comma. In cases where the author is unknown, the writer of the MLA style papers is allowed to use the abbreviation Anon' to denote anonymous. This shows that the author could not identify the author of the work. In some instances the material sourced may lack pagination, and as such there may be no page numbers to write. In such cases the author of the MLA style papers is allowed to use the abbreviation "n.pag" to denote that there was no pagination within the source. This is common for internet sources that may have no page numbers. A part from in-text citations the author should also include a list of works cited ordered in an alphabetical order at the end of his or her work. This list should within the MLA style papers should contain the authors' details, title of works, and year of publication, source type and the place of publication or production.
