MLM Leaders- Geoffrey Rush shows you the stuff that create top producers
In the Academy award winning movie, The King's Speech, Geoffrey Rush has an attitude. I don't mean he's got a bad attitude. His role, based on real life Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue, clearly has just the opposite. It's what we affectionately label in the network marketing industry- SWAGGER.
In the film, when Lionel (Geoffrey Rush) first meets the wife of the stammering soon-to-be-King George VI, the future Queen Mother (Helena Bonham Carter) says 'my husband is required to speak publicly and has seen just about every therapist out there. And they couldn't cure him of this stutter'. To which he states, 'Well, he hasn't seen ME.' She later asks him to come to their royal home to do the work. He demands, 'My office. My time. My rules'.
Every good MLM leader has an attitude of undeniable belief about who they are, what they believe in and why people should listen to them. If we could place Geoffrey Rush's character into any mlm company today, there would be no question in my mind the dude would hit the top of the pay structure in no time at all and eventually be a massive MLM leader. Why? Because you can get the hang of any script that answers your prospect's objections and have memorized exactly every little thing about your company's commission structure and products, but it doesn't mean squat if you don't have the I'm-heading-to-the-top kind of swagger.
All the top producing MLM leaders know they must stand strong or very few will follow. Look at some of these episodes and how they parallel what an MLM Leader might say.
Helena Bonham Carter: Your methods are unorthodox and controversial.
Geoffrey Rush: I can cure your husband but I need total trust
Thomas Teammate: I don't like your system. Can I use my own formula for inviting folks to a presentation?
MLM Leader: NO. I can help you move up the ranks quickly. But you must believe in the approach as well as the success of the system.
Geoffrey Rush: What was your earliest memory?
Colin Firth: I'm not here to discuss personal matters.
Geoffrey Rush: So why ARE you here then?
Pam Prospect: My out-of-work neighbor says I shouldn't cough up hard earned cash to join this thing. She says it's a rip-off.
MLM Leader: Pamela, you said you were interested in making an extra $1000 per month. Are you going to listen to your unemployed neighbor- or decide based on the testimonials of people doing precisely what YOU want to do? Why ARE you here then...what do you hope to accomplish?
Geoffrey Rush: Why should I waste my time listening to you?
Colin Firth: (yelling loudly) Because, I have a voice.
Geoffrey Rush: (pause) Yes. Yes, you do.
Patricia Prospect: How much have you made so far? Why should I listen to you?
Network Marketing Leader: What I've accomplished is not as significant as what YOU will do with it. I'm going to the top with or without you. And you're either going to be on my success train or you're going to get left behind at the depot.
Geoffrey Rush: What will I call you?
Colin Firth: Your Highness.
Geoffrey Rush: How about Bertie?
Tony Teammate: When can I call you with questions?
MLM Leader: First, finish steps 1 through 3. That proves to me you mean business and you're willing to work the business the right way. When you've finished, then call me.
Geoffrey Rush: Please don't smoke. Don't do that in my office.
Colin Firth: But the Royal Doctors told me it relaxes the throat.
Geoffrey Rush: Well, they're idiots.
Colin Firth: But, they've all been knighted.
Geoffrey Rush: It's official then. They're ROYAL idiots.
No smoking. My place. My time. My rules. My exercises. My tactics. It's clear. You do it or you don't get to work with me, period. Now, seriously, if that's not more than a British pound of swagger, I don't know what is. What this civilian did for the Royal Monarch, MLM leaders do day in and day out. They help people muster up the courage to be the leaders they're born to be. As Rush so beautifully declared to the uncertain King,"You can do it. You needn't be governed by fear".
In the end, Geoffrey Rush's role as the unconventional leader who made it conceivable for a stammering King to soar above hard times and rally his people through an all-out war, is no different than you or I as MLM leaders in the trenches. Stand strong with your point of view even if it means losing a high profile prospect. Clients that might be higher up the economic ladder are not unlike you or I. Let them know they need to see you eye to eye. Because you've got what they want- swagger.
