Modern Contents Insurance will insure your possessions in the case of theft. But do the policies that we buy into need to be updated with the times?

The majority of us now by our music through the internet, paying per track rather than going out into reality and purchasing a CD. Tapes are now extinct, and the LP is a memory, only purchased by music buffs.

But are our music downloads protected? It would seem that the majority of them are not. As a nation, we spend over one billion on downloading tracks, but only five percent of people who download them are covered by their home insurance. Nearly a quarter of us expect that we couldn't be covered for this in the case of the theft of our computers, and over fifty five percent haven't a clue whether they are insured or not. Only a quarter of insurers provide a service whereby our downloads are protected, and for the majority, the maximum offering is a mere two thousand pounds.

Music buffs recommend backing p your valuable music collection onto an external hard drive, or another machine to ensure that in the case of burglary, or a computer related virus, that your precious tunes are not lost.

But maybe insurance companies need to move with the times and insure us for some of the things we really need. If the majority of the UK population are buying from downloads rather than music shops, then surely our quotes should reflect this?
