Macushield vitamins help to prevent and treat AMD
There has been a lot of hype recently about Macushield as
, unlike other eye-vitamin supplements, they contain all 3 of the carotenoids that make up the Macula.
Age-related Macula Degeneration (ARMD) causes a loss of vision or potentially even blindness through a hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. There are two main types of ARMD, Dry' and Wet'. Around 90% of cases have the dry form for which there is no certain AMD treatment proven.
In trying to prevent ARMD or help to delay its progression, it is important to understand the risk groups aside from just age (the biggest one!). These include:
People with a family history of AMD
People who smoke
People with high cholesterol, obesity or that struggle to get their 5 fruit and veg a day key vitamins for the eyes
Prolonged exposure to UltraViolet light
Women are at a higher risk than men
Caucasian people seem to be at a higher risk than other races
Many of these points are controllable whilst others are not. Perhaps one of the key elements is nutrition. Here's This is because the Macula is paramount to seeing and includes three pigments: Lutein, Meso-zeaxanthin and Zeaxanthin. Foods with these 3 caroteniods help give our Macula a good chance of keeping healthy. This is because low macula pigment density has shown to predispose the individual to ARMD.:
Lutein: vegetables such as spinach and kale.
Zeaxanthin: yellow and orange vegetables or plants like corn or squash. Also dark green leafy vegetables like Kale.
Meso-zeaxanthin: not common in a typical Western diet but found in some quantities in shrimps and certain fish like salmon and sea bass.
Most people struggle to get their 5-a-day or a sufficient amount of the foods identified above so many people with at risk, take vitamin supplements. There are various brands, including iCaps, Nutrof, Ocuvite, Macusan and Macushield. Except the last one, they tend to focus on Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Omega 3 (also good for eyes). Some people have found this to help them. Indeed, your body uses Lutein to make Meso-zeaxanthin Mz. Meso-zeaxanthin is at the very center of the Macula where vision is sharpest and is increasingly being hailed as the best neutraliser of free radicals. However, Mz has been patented by Macushield which is what all the hype has been about. So does it work?
There have been some position results from Macushield research but clinical trials are still taking place. Macushield has shown that the health of the macula can be boosted by 41% after 140 days of taking Macushield. However, most people's attention has been in the miracle' stories and a media hype of Macushield reviews last year (2009) which have seen Macushield as a supplement that actually reverses AMD rather than just a preventative measure. The famous one is retired Optometrist Harry Marsland (we have a manager here who worked with him!) was severely affected but recovered 95% of his vision after using Macushield! Another high-profile story was from Jimmy Aherne (famous Cork Hurler) who was told he would be blind in a few years from AMD but found the Macushield improved his vision dramatically. We are delighted to say that we have had many customers with similar stories although results do vary and some have had little noticeable benefit.
Whether you take supplements or not, it seems that, as we all keep being told, we should each a well-balanced and low-cholesterol diet, and of course give up smoking (if you smoke). Personally, given some of the key carotenoids of the Macula pigment are not always easy to attain in sufficient quantities within a typical diet, eye-vitamin supplements may be the answer. I personally take Macushield and recommend these due to the inclusion of the all important Mz.
We have not had any side-effects reports but please always consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
