Madikeri Packages - In Kodava Land

Madikeri is the district head quarters of Coorg and is located at an altitude of 1525 meters.

Coorg or Kodagu was ruled by the Haleri Kings between 1600 and 1834. The third of the Haleri Kings, Maduraja is said to have levelled the steep mountains of North Kodagu to set up the town called Mudduraja Keri which in due course came to be known as Madikeri.

Madikeri is a small town sprawling in the middle of cloud-wreathed hills all around.

The most important monument in Madikeri is the Madikeri Fort. Built on high grounds with a unique blend of traditional and modern styles of architecture, the Madikeri Fort looms large over the town. Built first by the Haleri Kings, this fort was rebuilt in the early 19th century.

In the center of the fort is the palace which presently houses various government offices. Built in European style, the palace is said to have secret underground routes. The Fort also houses a Ganesha Temple, a Chapel and museum that display several royal antiques like weapons, idols, canons, stone carvings etc.

Raja seat, a beautiful garden overlooking a deep valley is a vantage point from where one can view spectacular sunsets on the Western Ghats. In the yester years, the Kings of Kodagu used to enjoy the scenery, thus giving this name. Adjoining the Raja's seat is a toy train and an ancient temple, Chouti Mariamma.

Nearby is a Gandhi Mandap where the bust of Mahatma Gandhi was built in memory of Gandhiji's visit to Madikeri during the freedom struggle.

About 8 km from Madikeri is one of the most popular picnic spot, the Abbi falls. The Abbi falls takes a plunge 70 ft down and is found amongst coffee plantations and lush green forests.

The worshipping deity of Kodagu, River Cauvery takes her origin as a spring in Talacauvery, 48 km from Madikeri. At the foot of Brahmagiri hills is the holy pond where it is said that Goddess Cauvery takes the form of a river. Triveni Sangam is formed at the confluence of Cauvery, Kannike and Sujyothi.

Omkareshwara Temple was built in 1820 and has a mixture of Islamic and Gothic styles of architecture. Gadduge or three tombs with domes in Islamic style and minarets with gold coating carries the graves of Virarajendra, his wife and guru.

About 25 km from Madikeri is an island surrounded by the Cauvery River, called Nisargadhama and is a picturesque picnic spot offering a forest experience amidst a bamboo forest, hanging bridge, boat rides, elephant rides, tree top houses, and a deer park.

A lot of tour operators provide Madikeri Packages according to the tourists budget and specific needs. Madikeri is well connected by road.
