Madison Painting - Hiring A Madison Painter

How to Hire a Painter
First rule of thumb to hiring a painter is to get at least three estimates. If they want to charge you for this service, you may want to take that into consideration. In my book, I would consider walking away! Most professional painters will give you an estimate at no charge. This is a simply a cost of doing business for them, not an inconvenience. Ask for the estimate in writing. Make sure that it includes all of the work that you want done and the time frame of when the work will be done. Ask if a deposit is required and who is responsible for purchasing the paint. Brushes, drop cloths and other tools of the trade should not have additional charges. The deposit should be minimal and only to hold your time slot.
Ask for their opinion on the best products to use for the task at hand. Do some research to make sure that you are comfortable with their assessment. Knowledge is power in negotiation. If you are educated in the process, it will be much harder for someone to take advantage of you.
Ask for references and check them out! Although this is an important step not to be ignored, you cannot rely solely on this. It would be foolish for a painter to give the names and numbers of unsatisfied customers. Ask for recent customers in addition to some from the past. You are looking to see that the painter has a history of happy customers. Check with your Better Business Bureau for any complaints. Happy customers dont call their local BBB to chat up their favorite painter.
Interview them while they are at your home. Ask if they are bonded, licensed and insured. Dont be afraid to require them to provide a certificate of insurance. This should be NO PROBLEM for any business. They should either have one available for you or they should be able to have their insurance agent provide one to you with a simple phone call. Unfortunately, trust is something that needs to be earned these days. If they give you the run around about providing a certificate, then you might want to look elsewhere. Ask them about their guarantee. You will want to know what they will do if the job is not to your satisfaction or not done on time. Keep in mind that the quality of painting products you choose may have a huge effect on the quality of the job. Pick the best products that you can afford. You will be much happier with the results. That goes for the painter as well; the cheapest isnt always the best. Pick one who you think will do a good job and keep you within your budget.
Once you choose your painter, and hire them, get the contract in writing with the agreed upon terms and conditions. Both you and your painter must sign. Remember, this is a two way street. They want the work, you want the work done.
Hiring a professional painter may be the best decision you make.
