Both the cities are flocked by the tourists and pilgrims every year due to their impotance among the pilgrims and their prime positions in the Hindu epics. Both the places have a lot of temples and sites with religious importance. The approximate distance between the two cities of Rameshwaram and Madurai is just about 178 km and it takes a travel of about 3 hours and 40 minutes by road to reach Rameshwaram from Madurai.

Madurai and Rameshwaram are well-connected to each other via modes of transportations like rail and road. Buses run by the state government as well as private agencies ply between Madurai and Rameshwaram every 30 minutes and charge from about 59 to 125 rupees per traveler depending upon the type of bus chosen to travel from Madurai to Rameshwaram. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach Rameshwaram from Madurai in train. The main trains that ply between the two stations of Madurai and Rameshwaram are, Cape Rmm Express No: 12790 which starts from Madurai Junction at 2:20 am and reaches Rameshwaram at 5:20 am taking a travel time of about 3 hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and, Rameshwaram Express No: 16734 which starts from Madurai Junction at 4:00 pm and reaches Rameshwaram at 7:45 pm taking a travel time of about 3 hours and 40 minutes only on Thursdays.

There is no airport at Rameshwaram and so Rameshwaram cannot be reached from Madurai via air. The nearest airport to Rameshwaram is at Madurai itself.

Journey by train is the most comfortable and economical mode of transportation from Maduarai to reach Rameshwaram, especially for senior citizens and those with travel sickness. Journey by car from Madurai to Rameshwaram is comfortable for group travelers and families with kids. Bus journey from Madurai to Rameshwaram is suited only for backpackers and individual travelers.
